Kobo eReader Price, Specs vs Kindle 3 and Nook 3G eBook Reader

The publishing company Borders released Kobo eReader as participation in the burgeoning ebook reader business. The company is now accepting pre-orders for its own e-reader product called the Kobo for $149.99. This is a lot cheaper than the Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook 3G eReader which retails for more than $250. The Kobo uses the same E-ink technology and also has the same 6-inch display screen like the Kindle and the Nook. Borders is optimistic that Amazon’s failure to satisfy their customers’ request for a more affordable e-reader will make the Kobo a big seller. The rising interest of book lovers to switch to electronic versions has created a real market for cheaper and no-frills electronic reader. The official release date of Kobo eReader was on June 17.

The Kobo is cheap eReader because the manufacturer decided to forego of the Wi-Fi or 3G features. Borders is right to presume that many people just want a good digital reader. The compact design of Kobo makes it ideal for reading on the go. It has Bluetooth connectivity so you can still transfer digital books and magazines from your computer or smart phone. Updating your book lists will be done mostly via USB connection so the lack of WiFi isn’t that of a big deal. Borders is selling this device with 100 pre-loaded e-books and you can just sync your purchase of new titles with the help of the Borders desktop application.

It ships with a built-in 1GB of storage space but is easily expandable through the SD/MMC port. The E-ink technology means you can read anywhere, even under the full sun. The battery life for this device is reported to be 2 weeks or 8000 page turns which is about at par with the Kindle. Feature for feature, the Kobo can be a real threat to Amazon’s e-reader. Unless Kindle 3 prices go down, Borders is sure to recruit a lot of converts.
