Augen eReader Review | Augen eBook Reader With Linux OS On Sale At K-Mart Stores for $89

Date Published: July 24, 2010

Our own Augen Tablet or Augen Tablet review is updated! If you live near a K-Mart store, hurry up and go buy the cheap Augen eReader. The Kindle-clone Augen eReader called The Book is a color eBook reader. This Augen “The Book” eReader is now on sale in limited stocks at select K-Mart Stores in the US. The $89 price tag for this color-screen eReader is one of this year’s best bargains next to Velocity Micro Color eBook Reader powered by Android OS. The Book has eschewed the E-ink technology of the Amazon Kindle and instead opted to use a full-color 7-inch LCD display. If you are not happy with the Kindle and Nook’s Black and White display, get this very affordable color e-Reader from Augen.

Augen The Book eReader Features Color LCD Screen

Our Augen eReader Review: The Book eReader is cheap because it doesn’t use a touch screen display. I believe Augen is the first manufacturer to sell a sub-$100 eBook reader! If they sell it online and ship it worldwide, I will immediately purchase one too like the cheap Barnes and Noble Nook 3G eBook Reader. This color eReader boasts a 400 MHz ARM processor and runs a full Linux 2.6.4 Operating System. Augen is marketing The Book as more than a simple eReader. Since this device possesses a decent CPU and a colored screen, Augen says The Book is also a portable media player and mobile internet device.

Aside from supporting all major e-book format like XT, PDF, HTML, CHM, RTF, FB2, EPUB, PRC and MOBI files, Augen announced that their device also support both WiFi connectivity. It has a full browser too and a QWERTY keyboard for easy web surfing. The Book ships with a leather case and has 150 pre-installed books. The physical QWERTY keyboard is augmented by WordPad, a program for typing notes and other documents. If you know how to install Linux programs, I bet you can install more applications on this machine. The Book comes with 2 GB built-in storage but it supports standard SD cards up to 32GB in size.

I am glad that Augen installed the full Linux OS version rather than Google’s Android OS. A full desktop operating system running on The Book offers serious computing potential. I know my way around Linux and I intend to use The Book as a full-blown laptop!

    bought at k-mart in november. battery life zero. bought extended warranty. as of feb 1st. k-mart will not honor warranty. augen will not answer customer support hot line, and voice mail is full and can’t leave a message.price may seem cheap, because the unit is also cheap

    @Richard C. Nickeson, Ph.d.,

    I am having problems myself. The instructions aren’t very instructive. I can’t read anything I put in the SD slot and it doesn’t give instructions on how to access it. The instructions certainly aren’t very friendly to a person who hasn’t ever used a similar product. Where do I find explicit instructions?

    I may have to return this “book”. The SD card slot doesn’t work, the USB cable was missing from the box and the customer service sucks.
