The guys behind the Herotab brand of Android tablets have finally created an Android OS 2.3 version. I already reviewed the HeroTab C8 7″ 1GHz Android OS 2.2 Tablet PC two months ago and I was gushing over it as an ideal alternative to more expensive Android products like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Now, let me introduce the latest Herotab MID815 Metal Tablet PC.
Herotab MID815 Metal Edition is an 8-inch Tablet PC powered by the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. The manufacturer not only upgraded the software and changed the chassis from plastic to aluminum alloy but also gave it a faster processor. The Herotab MID815 is powered by 1.2 GHz Samsung S5PV210 (ARM Cortex TM-A8) with 512KB L2 Cache! That’s almost as powerful as Intel’s Atom netbook CPU!
Furthermore, just like the Herotab C8, the MID815 Metal Edition also comes with its own discreet Samsung SGX540 3D graphics accelerator which supports OpenGL-ES 1.1 & 2.0 and OpenVG 1.0. Not only can this tablet run the latest Android 3D games but it also supports skip-free full HD 1080p video playback!
The Herotab MID815 Metal Tablet PC still retains the 512MB of RAM and 4GB internal flash storage. The 8-inch display is still resistive so it doesn’t support multi-touch operation. But on the brighter side, this android tablet comes with a 2-megapixel front-facing camera that with a simple hack will also capture VGA video. New to this version is also the USB On The Go support but I’m still a bit sad that Herotab’s geeks still did not pre-install the official Android Market App.
The installed Slideme Market instead which doesn’t offer as much apps as Google’s official Android store. It’s a minor inconvenience but you can just install the Android Market app by yourself. The Herotab MID815 still retains support for 3G USB dongles, HDMI output and WiFi b/g but it has no Ethernet port.
Herotab MID815 Metal Android Tablet PC is on sale for only $169 with free worldwide shipping at www.merimobiles.com, that’s $100 off its $269 regular price.
