Samsung Series 7 Windows 7 Tablet PC Available for Pre-Order at Amazon
Despite raking in many millions of dollars from the profits of Galaxy Tab and Android phones, Samsung is still catering to Microsoft’s whims. The Korean chaebol first demoed a Windows 7 tablet computer at CES 2011 5 months ago and Samsung has kept its promise to ship out the Samsung Series 7 tablet. Samsung itself is taking pre-orders for this Windows 7 tablet at Amazon. Samsung is already taking pre-order sales for their upcoming Samsung Series 7 Windows tablet PC at Amazon!
This tablet was first called the Samsung Sliding 7 Series tablet PC during its first debut at CES in January. Taking cue from smartphone designs, the Samsung Series 7 tablet has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard unlike the Evigroup SmartPaddle Windows 7 Tablet PC that is purely touchscreen. Despite having a huge 10.1-inch capacitive LCD display, Samsung felt there’s still a need for a real keyboard for the Samsung Series 7! And I agree, as per my experience typing on a virtual keyboard is still a much slower process compared to my 75 words per minute typing speed on a physical keyboard!
Unfortunately, Samsung decided to ignore the much-hyped dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 and Atom N550 CPU and instead opted to put a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom Oak Trail Z670 processor on the Series 7. This is because the company is shipping this tablet with the latest Windows 7 32-bit OS and based on their tests, the Oak Trail proved adequate enough. To compensate for this lack of dual-core dynamo, the Series 7 gets a basic 2GB of DDR2 RAM.
Computing speed is also greatly increased by the inclusion of either 32GB or 64GB SSD flash drive instead of the cheaper regular hard drive. Two cameras were also added on this Samsung Series 7 tablet. One, a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera and at the back of it is a 3MP camera. Since this is a Windows 7 tablet, expect this to perform like a regular netbook of comparable specs. It’s definitely geared towards office productivity but I hope I can play World of Warcraft Cataclysm on this machine!
The Samsung Series 7 tablet is also equipped with a 4-in-1 card reader and will feature 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. It’s got USB 2.0 ports and 1 HDMI output. Battery life will be comparable to a netbook since this tablet will ship with a basic 6-cell Lithium Polymer battery. Of course, don’t expect the Series 7 to last as long as the iPad 2! Despite having only half-as long battery life, the Samsung Series 7 in my book is a much better buy than the iPad 2 or Motorola Xoom!
