Moving A Website to a Virtual Private Server (VPS) or VDS

April 10, 2009 · Filed Under Web Development

This site has moved to a virtual private server (VPS) also known as virtual dedicated server (VDS). Of all the sites I administer, Technology Talks is the most frequently updated by my team. However, I admit there were several occasions when they do not even write a single article in one day, this site has had the most amount of average posts per week. We have outlined many articles up for publication over the next couple of weeks. Eric, the expert in Local Area Networking and Gaming will be publishing his own mini-series of posts about SOHO and LAN. These posts will be edited by me of course prior to hitting the publish button. I will also monitor the actual stuff these guys will intend to cover.

As to the virtual private server we purchased for this site, we are still testing its overall speed and reliability. So far, the team constituting our web hosting provider (which we will mention in the succeeding articles) have been very courteous and quick in addressing some issues we have observed during the transition period (moving of files, error logs, etc.).

We have also observed some significant changes in speed and handling of plugins of our new VPS (that are usually handled by some cheap shared web hosting services poorly). We have had the unfortunate experience of having this site down for 3 days in a span of one week because of some plugins we installed creating a bottleneck in the transfer of data over the internet. Our Cool Gadgets site also took a painful blow due to these plugins and some experimental settings we did with the CSS file of the site and other settings, hence the updates were nowhere to be seen for many days.

Moving of files and migraating to a new web host will be the main topics we will cover in the next few articles. Stay updated and you will certainly learn how to move your site or blog to a new web hosting provider without encountering too many errors or difficulties. You may post your queries through the comment section of those articles once they’re published. Thank you for coming back to this blog even during tough times. JPS, Site Administrator
