Twitter Debuts Location Sharing Feature Like Using a GPS Device
Twitter unveiled recently its latest innovation, the Tweet With Your Location feature. This option is disabled by default because Twitter wants its customers to have the control over this location-sharing facet. A user needs to opt-in to enable sharing your location with his tweets by going to his account settings and checking the option. Once you enabled it, Twitter applications will start tagging all your posts with your current location. Please take note that the location information you share will be an exact GPS location (latitude and longitude), which is sent from your browser or internet-enabled device. Twitter will show location information once you enabled this feature and allowed your browser or device to transmit your coordinates.
Your tweets can then be annotated with just that exact GPS data, or with a place (a city or neighborhood), or with both types of information. You can choose which type of location information you want to share.
You can disable sharing your location anytime you want by going back to account settings and un-checking the feature. Twitter also lets you share your location on a per post basis. For example, if you are in a birthday or wedding event, you may choose to give exact coordinates and address. There is also an option wherein you can delete all location information from all your tweets.
Note that this feature requires you to use Firefox 3.5 (or higher) or Google Chrome. If you want to use this location-sharing option on an older version of Firefox or Internet Explorer, you will have to download Google Gears.
This new aspect to tweeting is initially offered to the U.S. but the company said they will soon be rolling out the same service to other countries in the near future.
