Free Facebook Email Service Project Titan Is Coming Soon
In a bid to offer more than social networking and gaming to its 400 million plus users worldwide, Facebook is working hard on its own webmail. Facebook dubbed the free email service as Project Titan, allegedly a full-blown webmail with features comparable to Gmail. Project Titan is going to completely support POP/IMAP. This means you will be able to connect your email not only through Facebook but from any email app that supports POP/IMAP. Rumor has it that Project Titan is already being touted as a potential Gmail-killer. There is still an ongoing bad blood between Facebook and Google (which launched Google Buzz – Google’s social networking tool built-in with Gmail). Facebook is offering more applications for free in an effort to maintain its vast daily website traffic. Google is unhappy that it can’t serve Google Adsense on Facebook.

This is a eagerly anticipated development. Facebook’s messaging system is static and hard to use. There are currently millions of us who just dislike managing our messages on it. The only saving grace is our addiction to Farmville and the action-packed Mafia Wars (which can now be played in iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch units), among other free game apps. But now that they are earning real profits, this company ought to improve its messaging feature. While its true that they made a redesign of the Facebook home page and created a new way to upload photos, these are just cosmetic changes compared to the proposed Project Titan. People wants more from their social networking website. Facebook has grown explosively the past year and if it wants to keep this momentum going, a free email app is always a great incentive to recruit and keep users loyal.
Besides, email is still the best way to identify an individual. Facebook likes to keep a keen eye on people’s activities and personal data. By having its own email system, Facebook will be able to monitor people’s web activities more efficiently. I bet they aren’t doing this free email thing out of charity, Project Titan is another useful tool to let Facebook gather more accurate personal data that are much-coveted by advertisers and online marketers.
