Facebook Android OS SDK for Developers Supports Advanced Authentication via OAuth 2.0
Facebook has finally acknowledged the fast-rising popularity of Android OS. Recently, the mobile development team of Facebook has released the official Software Development Kit (SDK) for the Android OS platform. You can test out the beta version by downloading it from http://github.com/facebook/facebook-android-sdk/. This is a big turnaround policy for them since they always favored the iPhone platform. As a matter of fact, the company released the iPhone SDK more than a year ago and has never made any effort back then to support the growing Android OS community of developers. Back in March, a new Android update was also launched. Said Android update aimed to improve OpenGL support with Android NDKr3.
Well, things have changed because this year, there are more Android-based phones being sold in the US than iPhone handsets. Facebook has always been opportunistic and, predictably, is now opening its platform to Android developers.
It is also surprising to learn that the new Android SDK release is more advanced than the iPhone SDK. Steven Sonnef, the Facebook software engineer responsible for coding the Android SDK has incorporated new features not found in the iPhone SDK. No reason has been given as to why but I can surmise that Facebook released this superior SDK as a gesture of apology for the company’s belated action. These 3 brand-new features are namely:
- Advanced authentication via OAuth 2.0
- Graph API integration
- Publish Facebook Stories back to Facebook via Feed Forms
This favorable development should all be celebrated by programmers and users alike. The official SDK release from Facebook will empower Android platform developers to make more social-connected games and programs. Sonnef described the Facebook Android SDK’s library as light and simple. Integrating apps with Facebook will only require a few lines of Java codes. Say what you will about iPhone’s popularity with Facebook-users, a lot of converts will come out once Android phones get more Facebook-complimentary programs.
