New Facebook Launched After Six Years: Gets a New Home Page Facelift

Date Published: February 13, 2010

After having been attacked by a vicious Facebook virus or several worms in the past, a new Facebook site redesign must have been one solution the admins have thought of. Of course, the new Facebook home page was an attractive treat to everyone especially those who are new to the social network but, is the new Facebook any good? Here’s my review of the new Facebook.

First, I could say I was one of the unlucky 80 Million Facebook addicts who got the new homepage redesign. I went out for lunch and came back to login to my FarmVille account but lo and behold! My Facebook Homepage did a Heidi Montag on me. The new home page was a stranger and was perplexing the first time I had it yesterday. It took me some time to figure out out how to do the usual things. The bottom toolbar where I used to access apps and games have completely disappeared! I couldn’t find my App shortcut for FarmVille, I had to use the Search button so I could harvest my Strawberry crop at FarmVille.

The New Facebook Requires a Plugin in Firefox

It occurred to me that Facebook is now using the Left Navigation Panel for the old toolbar’s shortcuts. The Friend Invites, Messages Notification is now also at the left most part of the top navigation panel. I play a lot of Facebook games and my spammed Notification page is something I like ignoring. Facebook must be thinking, “Hey dude, you gotta click and open your Notification page! We are putting it near your ugly profile pic so you will remember to click it.”

I wasn’t the only one whining about the new facelift of Facebook’s Home Page. My almost-5,000 friends were spamming their profile Wall with annoyed and angry notes about it. Instant change is something we really don’t like. We were comfortable with the old Facebook home page layout and we were completely taken off-balance with this new modification. It would have been much easier if Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg made another Open Letter again warning us of the coming change yesterday. I just found out that Facebook is celebrating its sixth anniversary this week and the new home page was implemented to coincide with this momentous occasion. I also learned that Facebook has now 400 million users. That’s 50 million higher than it was last November 2009!

Anyway, I would like to admit that after a day of using this new layout, I am now happy Facebook made it. I realized that everything is now much easier to access right on the home page. My Facebook apps and games bookmarks like the one for Mafia Wars are quick to get hold of right on the left side panel. This new layout seems to be more efficient and user-friendly.

One last thing, I also found out that Facebook made a new method of uploading pictures. If you are using Firefox 3.6 or earlier version, you must download a new Facebook Plug-in to upload pics. It’s a 2MB .exe plug-in installer that you need to run. I have to say I don’t like this new way of uploading pics. I like the old one where you can choose either the Java uploader or simple uploading. This new plugin for photo uploading is sluggish and won’t load right away.

I tried to access my facebook account this morning (Feb. 14) to feed my FooPet and was shocked when I was sent to my old original page; which I haven’t had access to forever! I had the New facebook set up last night, so I don’t know what happened. I tried to delete the old one but can’t remember my old password, I reversed my name and changed the password, nothing is working! This isn’t the email I’ve used for my facebook account as I don’t want to screw anything else up. I’d really appreciate any help you can give me. Thx :)
