Digsby vs Yahoo Messenger, Gtalk and BlackBerry Messenger 5.0
We’ve been great fans of Digsby since April 2009 and we have found the update in late June a tremendous upgrade, if we may say so. It has been improved much to the satisfaction of many Digsby users. There had been some problems with authentication lately and other issues especially in logging in using Gtalk accounts (to be discussed in future posts) but overall, it’s one pretty amazing instant messaging + social networking + email tool. Also, we think that more softwares as creative as Digsby need to be created in the future.
How does Digsby vs more established instant messaging softwares like Yahoo Messenger (YM), Gtalk and the new Blackberry Messenger 5.0 (download links will be provided when available)? From experience, we find that Digsby consumes lesser memory than YM and GTalk. We do not know yet how Blackberry Messenger 5.0 consumes resources of Blackberry smartphones as we have not tried it ourselves but against the two others mentioned (PC platform), Digsby is a lot better in many terms. We really hope in the near future we can compare BBM 5.0 and Digsby in terms of performance when the latter becomes available for mobile devices (hopefully).

For a summary of what we have found out on PC memory consumption (using a laptop with 2GB of RAM),
- Digsby – 5MB
- Gtalk – 10MB
- Yahoo Messenger – 16MB
These are estimates of actual use but Digsby with Gtalk and Yahoo Messenger on several occasions, we’d say Digsby is a really the fastest instant messenger we’ve tried. We will update this in another post and discuss a little more about the Gtalk login error that we have encountered a few times before.
We’ll follow up on this shortly as we prepare our notes on features you will love in Digsby.
Update: Looks like Gtalk Login problem in Digsby has been addressed as we have just been able to login using our Gtalk account details.
