Anyway, what is a Sonic Boom? According to Wikipedia:

The term Sonic Boom is commonly used to refer to the shocks caused by the supersonic flight of an aircraft. Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding much like an explosion. Thunder is a type of natural sonic boom, created by the rapid heating and expansion of air in a lightning discharge.

Now, here is some info about the STS-128 Space Shuttle. The STS-128 is actually the name of the NASA mission which used the Space Shuttle “Discovery” and was sent to the International Space Station (ISS). It has successfully launched last August 28, 2009. After STS-128’s 13-day mission, the crew was about to come home on the 10th of September. However, Space Shuttle Discovery’s landing was postponed due to unsafe weather conditions. The next day, STS-128 Space Shuttle Discovery gave 2 loud sonic booms as a signal of the incoming space shuttle landing. NASA was guiding “Discovery” pilots as they manipulated the space shuttle on its glide to the air base. STS-128 in Space Shuttle Discovery safely landed on Runway 22 of Edwards Air Force Base, California in September 11, 2009.
