Windows 7 or Linux Ubuntu 8.10: Which is Faster After Windows 7 Tested Slow?

November 15, 2008 · Filed Under Windows

Windows 7 was recently tested and it was found out that Windows 7 is not that fast (contrary to Microsoft’s hope that it will be faster than Windows Vista). This result was based on benchmark tests conducted by several beta testers of Windows 7. This begs the question “Which is faster between Windows 7 and Linux Ubuntu 8.10?” I even questioned in my article if Windows 7 is just an upgraded Windows Vista and testers confirmed that it actually was after testing.

On the other hand, Linux Ubuntu 8.10 is the latest Linux distro which I have tested myself and I really find the new Linux Ubuntu 8.10 very fast using my Lenovo G410 laptop. Windows 7 has yet to be tested by this author. Since the Windows 7 released by Microsoft for testing is still in the Beta stage, I might as well wait for the version up for public release in mid-2009 (Windows 7’s release date). For now, I will stick with Windows Vista and Linux Ubuntu 8.10 as my operating systems for my notebook.

I only hope that Microsoft can still come up with solutions to perceived speed problems and the Vista “look and feel” of Windows 7 before the release date. With Microsoft’s resources, I’m sure they’ll find ways to address the weaknesses of Windows 7 Beta. ;-)

Well, I have tried both Win7 Beta and Ubuntu 8.10, and for me, with only 512mb RAM, Win7 is just as fast, but more aesthetically pleasing. Win7 is definitely faster than Vista, my computer can’t even handle Vista’s transparency, but it does Win7 transparency with no problem.

W7 still contains lots of debug code, which needs to be removed before the release in shops. This is an important drain on performance which all speed comparisons seem to forget.

I agree. Windows 7 beta still has a lot of bugs. Windows 7 needs a lot of re-programming.

Jessie: you don’t understand. Debug code isn’t bugs, it’s code designed to trap bugs (of which there are remarkably few in Windows 7). Hence the “de-” prefix.

All pre-release software products contain debug code. This code is removed before the product is released, resulting in better performence, since each operation now has less hoops to jump through.

Hope this explains it. My personal experience with various pre- and post-beta builds of Windows 7 shows that the further down the road, the snappier the performance gets. I expect to be pleasantly surprised by the Release Candidate, and then the RTM version when the OS is finally released.

I have been running Ubuntu from 7.04 to 8.10 and I will have to say on a holder less powerful system. Ubuntu wins. Faster and more stable. I have never had one single B.S. problem with Ubuntu. New users may seem to have issues. I have been Beta testing a legit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and I will have to say it is faster than XP. I have been running it on two of my systems and I have yet to have Windows 7 Crash.

In my experience with Windows 7 and Linux Ubuntu 8.10, I think my vote will go to Ubuntu. I still see some bugs and possible vulnerabilities in Windows 7. I just hope MIcrosoft can get them fixed before the public release of Windows 7.

If for some reason the ubuntu runs slower, it maybe because it is the first time you used it. Because the ubuntu’s definitely faster than win7. I got win7 in my other laptop and I find it really buggy.

I have Ubuntu Intrepid on my Bro’s laptop and it’s a breeze :D

    Camper,

I tested Windows 7 also. Yeah, it’s still buggy and needs a lot of improvments. For Ubuntu 8.10, I think the shortcomings are acceptable. Windows 7 vs Ubuntu 8.10? I’ll go for Ubuntu. :-)

Windows 7 beta vs stable, patched ubuntu 8.10 is hardly a fair comparison but lets play along.

Windows 7, in my experience is a mind boggling improvement over Vista in terms of appearance, speed and usability. It is comparable to ubuntu 8.10 in terms of speed especially on capable hardware, but better drivers are still to come for windows 7, which should in the end increase speed even further.

Windows 7 has so far been enough to keep me out of my intrepid install.

A final note: The beta of windows 7 is already less buggy than my vista install could ever hope to be.

    dave,

thanks for your comment on Windows 7. in my observation, Windows 7 really rocks. i just hope the public release will even be better. there are security features of ubuntu 8.10 though that i love a lot that’s why i’m using both operating systems in my computers. Windows 7 and ubuntu 8.10 are both cool, actually.

I am so happy that now we can talk of a Windows based OS and Linux OS on the same lines of performance. Its the result of a very healthy competition that Linux gave to Windows that today we are witnessing this improvement. I have installed RC1 of Win 7 and i am just excited for the RTM. Ubuntu still has to beat Win 7 in appearance matter.

I really love ubuntu 8.10 as I have it installed on my desktop. It is a very stable and fast system running on limited hardware resources. I recently bought a HP G50 notebook and unfortunately ubuntu wouldn’t work properly with it. The notebook was specifically designed for windows vista and I am stuck with it, it seems.

No that just means Ubuntu wont work on the damn system you have. Lack of support and compat from Ubuntu. If the hardware dont work on Ubuntu how is that a Windows issue?

I’m running Windows 7 beta on my machine right now. Which also has Windows Xp 32, 64, and ubuntu 8.10 installed.. ( All on there own hard drivers.. Out of all of them ubuntu runs the fastest and is the most stable. I use it the most because of that. People say that Windows 7 is going to be the down fall of Ubuntu and ETC. I think not. On a side note installed windows 7 on my old Dell C640 with a 1.8Ghz cpu and 32mb Ati 7500m.. None of the special features ( areo or w/e ) work. But in ubuntu all the visuals work. Programs crash in W7, and half the time the machine crashes for no reason. I for one have seen more improvement and usefulness in ubuntu then any other operating system. I play alot of 3d games and I still prefer ubuntu.

Of course not. You can’t be the downfall of something that’s already at the bottom – it’s got nowhere left to fall.

No, what Windows 7 is going to do is reinforce Windows’ position as the number 1 OS on the market. Linux will be playing catch-up for many a year still.

You think Ubuntu is at the bottom. Hmm that is very interesting. I love how this may seem true but really isn’t. Remember the loving site Wikipedia? Guess what they are using? How about most schools in lower income countries? How about in most servers? Overall with even more research and debugging and ripping apart W7. I have to say that Windows is close to loosing my whole business, which holds well over 400 desktops and laptops. We don’t need a new operating system, what we need is a more stable and secure operating system that doesn’t make us update every 90 days.

Heh, relax there. I was talking about global marketshare on desktops. Last I looked at the numbers, Linux had about 1% of that market. True, Ubuntu comprises what, 30% of that tiny segment? But when you look at the absolute numbers, there’s like 1 computer running Ubuntu for every 300 computers running Windows. Hell, several sources place even Win2k above all flavours of Linux combined.

Now, I’m not saying that to imply in any way that Linux in general or Ubuntu in particular is somehow inferior to Windows. All I’m saying is that Linux is, and will be for some time, the underdog on the desktop market. Yes, great steps are being made forward, but Windows 7 is even now, months before the final release, probably more popular than Linux and OS X combined. And within a year of its release, probably 95% of all new computers will be sold with Win7 preinstalled.

That’s why a statement like “Windows 7 will be the downfall of Ubuntu” is ridiculous. You have to be at or near the top for something to be able to threaten your market share, and Linux doesn’t really have anything to lose. Most of those who are already running it are unlikely to switch back to Windows anyway, so Linux can only move upwards in terms of market share.

So, again, don’t take this as some sort of attack towards Linux or Ubuntu. It was just an observation on the current situation.

“Remember the loving site Wikipedia? Guess what they are using?”
Not a clue, but if I had to hazard a guess, I’d say Ubuntu?

“How about most schools in lower income countries?”
Pirated copies of Windows 2k or XP? Again, not a clue.

    “How about in most servers?”
Windows 7 is a desktop OS, so the server market is irrelevant to the current discussion. I’m well aware that Windows isn’t the market leader there.

What is the point of this comparison?
Windows 7 is still in beta, while Ubuntu 8.10 is a finished product.
I am an Ubuntu user myself – but I still think that you shouldnt try to compare a beta version with a finished product – anything could change in Windows 7 prior to release.
We should compare the finished product with Ubuntu’s current release at that time – which quite likely will not be Ubunut 8.10 – Ubuntu’s new release is currently in open beta also.

Both windows 7 and Ubuntu 8.10 are modern operating systems. Will know how windows fare when it is released after MS put so much money in it and its marketing. My new laptop came with Vista premium but I just trimmed down that partition and install Ubuntu 8.10 on it. So far it is rock solid and doing all dvb watching and online broadcasting recording for me.
