Date Published: March 29, 2010

Although Windows Phone 7 Series was unveiled weeks ago by Microsoft, the company has just confirmed that their new operating system platform for mobile gadgets and smart phones won’t be supporting third-party apps created for Windows Mobile OS up to version 6.5.

Microsoft has made hints about this non-backward compatibility and rumors had been right about it. Public speculations have been officially proven true. Charlie Kindel, Microsoft’s Partner Group Program Manager for the Windows Phone Application Platform & Developer Experience, wrote in his official blog:

Previous Windows Mobile applications will not run on Windows Phone 7 Series.

Nonetheless, he pointed out that this doesn’t mean the end of current Windows Mobile development.

Kindel wrote:

We will continue to work with our partners to deliver new devices based on Windows Mobile 6.5 and will support those products for many years to come, so it’s not as though one line ends as soon as the other begins.

I already mentioned before that the new Windows Phone 7 Series is a completely new operating system and we should understand why Microsoft was compelled not to support third-party software written for Windows Mobile OS. Since it is a totally different operating system with programming codes not based on Windows Mobile OS, Windows Phone 7 Series will seriously jeopardized its stability if Microsoft software engineers added codes to accommodate previous third-party apps written for Windows Mobile OS.

This news about Windows Phone 7 Series also means third-party software developers will be obliged to create a new version of theirs apps for a completely new platform. Upgrading their current Windows Mobile 6.5 software versions will not be possible. This new OS platform requires new codes so if you bought a lot of Windows Mobile 6.5 apps, don’t expect software vendors to sell you a cheap upgrade to Windows Phone 7. They will be retailing full-priced apps and we, the consumer will have to bear the full cost.

Windows Phone 7 Series is poles apart from Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. The new Windows Phone 7′s user interface should already convince you it’s a whole new world. The only similarity between these two operating systems is they both support Microsoft Office Mobile and they can synchronize with Microsoft Exchange.
