Latest Linux Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition Features and Release Date
I have been using Linux Ubuntu 7.04 for a few months now and I really love the features of the Ubuntu desktop version. I’ve been waiting eagerly for the release of Linux Ubuntu 8.10 which will be released on October 30 this year. I am excited to see the features of the latest Linux Ubuntu 8.10 which are truly promising.
The reason why I use Linux Ubuntu as my second operating system is simple – to have a second OS that will serve me well when Windows XP or Windows Vista crashes (of course we have experienced this at least once I’m sure).
I am not a Linux guru or an expert in Linux. In fact I am not a serious Linux user despite the fact that majority of Linux distros are free (kudos to the GPL license). Linux is an opensource OS and many have turned to this OS after Microsoft wanted to dominate the desktop computing scene by creating pseudo-incompatibilities in the Window operating system.
The Linux Ubuntu distro is in my view one of the best Linux distros released. The features of the latest Linux Ubuntu 8.10 include the following:
3G Support
For constant connectivity public WiFi has limitations. Improvements to the network manager in Ubuntu 8.10 makes it simple to detect and connect to 3G networks and manage connectivity. This connectivity is delivered through an inbuilt 3G modem, through ‘dongle’ support, through a mobile phone or through Bluetooth. It is a complex environment that Ubuntu 8.10 simplifies through a single interface and the auto-detection of many of the most popular devices.
Write Ubuntu to and Install from a USB Drive
Ubuntu has been made available to users as an image for CDs and DVDs to date. But CDs and DVDs are slower, less portable and less convenient than USB sticks. Now, a simple application in Ubuntu will allow users to write Ubuntu to a USB drive, even a modified version of Ubuntu with their data on it, so it can be carried everywhere to plug in and use on any machine.
Guest Sessions
In a world of ‘always on’ pervasive computing it is more likely that users lend their computers to colleagues or friends at conferences, cafes or at parties so they can check email, etc. Guest sessions allow users to lock down a session easily so a guest can use the full system without interference with programs or data.
BBC Content
Starting the media players within Ubuntu (Totem Movie Player and Rhythmbox) launches a menu of selected content from the broadcaster that is free to air. This is a mixture of video, radio and podcasts and available in high quality, much of it playable using non-proprietary codecs. Content is constantly updated via the corporation’s stream and will vary dependent on location, though some content will be available for every user.
Latest Gnome 2.24 Desktop Environment
The GNOME desktop environment project releases its latest version which is incorporated into Ubuntu 8.10. New features include a new instant messaging client, a built-in time tracker, , improved file management and toolbars plus better support for multiple monitor use with the ability to set screen resolution by monitor.
I hope the above-given Linux Ubutun 8.10 features are enough to convince you to try Linux. There are many advantages of Linux as an operating system over Microsoft’s Windows: it’s opensource (free), loads faster, supports many (if not all) devices and peripherals, has good support, auto-updates are available in many releases, and consumes very little computer memory and other resources.
In fact, I’m also eyeing on Installing in my other computer Linux Mint – a Linux distro recommended by a friend. In addition, may I say that whatever is the distro through, Linux is a winner OS.

Yup. I did it! After a diskcrash on my Dell Inspiron 500m (bought 2003), due to use of non-Dell memory which overheated the disk, I tried to install XP Prof. on my 260 G USB hard-disk. Blahh!!! Blue screen.
So I thought: Forget it! This is my cue to start with Ubuntu. I found the Ubuntu 8.04 CD I had downloaded and burned a couple of months earlier, booted up and Whoopie! Ubuntu saw the USB disk immediately. Installation went like a wet dream. Now, I have run Ubuntu for 3 weeks. VERY impressed indeed! Guess I’ll continue that path. Why bother using windows with almost daily virus/spyware attacks when I can use an OS with HIGH security? If you really need to run windows software, check out Wine, which emulates windows rather good (a bit slow for my old lap, but nevertheless…)
Btw: I am checking out a new mini as a Christmas present to myself? May go for Dell mini9 or HP 1000, maybe even a Acer Aspire One. Anybody know who’s best regarding battery-time etc.?

eivind,
thanks for dropping by. The HP Mini 1000 is said to have the longest battery life among the three laptop brands you mentioned. HP laptops are featured in this site, http://www.kokeytechnology.com, just search for those models using the search box found above the email subscription box and you’ll see the full specs of those notebooks.
