At long last, Skype Software S.A.R.L. has caved-in to the insistent demand of iPhone owners. The company released the eagerly-anticipated Skype version 2.0 app for the iPhone. The most important feature of this new update is it now permits Skype-to-Skype calls over the 3G network of AT&T. Previously, Skype for the iPhone only allowed calls over WiFi. Disgruntled iPhone users have been complaining about this unfair treatment. They are paying so much money for unlimited data plan subscription and yet they can’t use Skype over 3G networks!

This deafening clamor has finally been satisfied with the release of version 2.0. Enjoy unlimited Skype calls over your 3G connection starting today. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Skype Software S.A.R.L., perhaps under pressure from AT&T, warned that Skype-to-Skype calls on the iPhone over 3G is only free-of-charge until August 2010. After which, the company will charge a small monthly fee for the use of this feature! OMG, what were they thinking? The PC version of Skype software has unlimited and free Skype-to-Skype calls! I hope iPhone users understand this stipulation that Skype 3G calls won’t be free after 90 days. I can understand the Luxembourg-based company’s decision was meant solely not to further antagonize AT&T. Skype is already disliked by most telecom companies. The VOIP software has accounted for 13% of global international call minutes in 2010. This market share encroachment by Skype is considerably threatening the revenues of AT&T and other telecom companies.
The Skype 2.0 update for the iPhone also includes other enhancements like improved voice-quality, better call-quality indicator, faster start-up time, and quick access to the dial-pad from the iPhone home screen. The free Skype 2.0 download is now live on the iTunes App Store. Skype version 2.0 is only compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPad and 2nd & 3rd Generation iPod Touch with iPhone OS 3.0 or higher.
