Free Google Goggles App Download for Android Phones
You can download the free Google Goggles app on Android Market for mobile devices. This is definitely a good mobile phone app if you have an Android phone. And the popularity of this app is a testament to the growing influence of Google in the mobile phone market despite the recently filed class-action suit by disgruntled Google Buzz users. Google still took center stage at Mobile World Congress in Spain and debut another significant app for Android OS-powered phones like Google Nexus One superphone and Verizon Motorola Droid Does Phone.
A very excited Google CEO Eric Schmidt demonstrated a new beta version of Google Goggles for Android that can translate text captured in pictures. There is an existing Google Goggles app that lets you do visual search on the web, for example you can use a photo of a place and Google search will give you all the necessary details about that particular photo/entity. This new Google Goggles app aims to provide portable language translation service.
Google explained, “You may wonder what’s happening in the background. On the simplest level, this prototype connects the phone’s camera to an optical character recognition (OCR) engine, recognizes the image as text and then translates that text into English with Google Translate.”
The Google Goggles app is going to be a great help for smartphone users. Even game apps are now easier to find for as long as you can take pictures of their boxes, logos and product bar codes. Millions of tourists who travel annually to exotic places on Earth will also benefit from its comprehensive database of places and landmarks. Just having their cell phones/mobile phones around gives them immediate ability to translate written foreign texts! No more need to carry a bulky dictionary or translator. Just imagine, you are in a restaurant in Berlin and the menu is in Deutsch. You do not want to order something you do not really want to eat, do you? So just whip out your Google Nexus One and take a picture of the menu selections and let Google Googles send that photo to its machine translation servers and you will get instant translation to English. Google Translate service currently supports 52 languages and the Android version of Google Googles will use the same free cloud translation service of Google so this application is going to be a massive help to business travelers, tourists and students.
There are some technical limitations of Google Goggles which include the following Minimum Requirements:
- An Android device running Android 1.6 or above
- A QVGA screen
- A camera with autofocus
To find out your Android version, go to Settings > About phone > Firmware version. From there you will determine if your phone is qualified to download Google Apps or not.
There are also some Known Issues in Google Goggles (Version 1.0):
- Putting the phone to sleep while Goggles in is camera mode will drain the battery
- Replaying queries that had given Place Results in the past won’t work because location is not saved
On the other hand, this isn’t really new because iPhone users already have the babelshot application that does what Google Goggles do for the Android OS. But you must remember that the babelshot app uploads to the same Google Translate service. Google and Apple are no longer in friendly terms and I can just imagine Google blocking out babelshot from using its services in the near future.
