Yelp has announced the release of their latest free Android phone app. Yelp 2.0 for Android comes with major improvements but is still free to download and use from the Android Market. If you are unfamiliar with the Yelp phenomenon, it’s a Web 2.0 website that pioneered local search and ranking of the best places to eat, shop, hang out and work out. Their software allows local people themselves to rate the places and publishes them for other users’ benefits. Yelp’s latest Android app release now includes check-ins and augmented reality.
Not to be outdone by its competitors, Yelp 2.0 now also joins the check-in craze. It now permits users to share their locations across Facebok when they go eat out. Yelp’s team of engineers promised to include Twitter-support in the near future. This check-in feature also allows users to take pictures of the restaurant they had they dinner or lunch and share them on Facebook. Users may also create a short recommendation for other Yelp users to go with the Facebook share.
Yelp 2.0 for Android Now Comes with Augmented-Reality Feature Called Monocle
The best feature for Yelp 2.0 is the augmented-reality option called Monocle. If you run this feature it, the Yelp app will activate your phone’s camera and brings up a radar display. The programming of this option will use a compass and GPS as a means to search the surrounding area for restaurants, bars, hotels, or everything. Just point your camera’s phone to the area around you and Monocle will provide you with results from Yelp recommendations on that area’s food establishments. It will show you the distance and rating for any restaurant or cafe bar but you may also double tap a particular shop and Yelp will pop up a complete profile for the said shop.
If you are an avid reviewer of your local town’s commercial establishments, go and download Yelp 2.0. It’s free and you can use it to share all your personal reviews of local restaurants, boutiques and hotels with other Yelp users. You will be doing a great public service not only to your fellow townmates but also to tourists and visitors to your town or city.
