Why Play Aion MMORPG and Why You Should Not
Aion offered other attractions aside from its gorgeous graphics and fluid animation. Unlike other MMORPG, Aion offered players who hit level 10 the immediate ability to fly. One of the strongest selling point of Aion was flying and fighting in flight. This is nothing revolutionary or original since the Chinese-made Perfect World already offered this mid-air PVP since 2007. The acclaimed Aion combat feature called chain-attack is also a fresh take on Person vs Person (PVP).
Chain attacks are an Aion combat system wherein the correct execution of successive skills can do more powerful skills is nothing new too. Cabal was already offering this combo execution of skills since 2006. Both Perfect World and Cabal are now Free to Play games which makes Aion less attractive since it charges players a monthly fee for the privilege of playing it. No wonder Aion’s star is falling fast. Players like me who tried it are quitting en masse. We do not want to pay $15 a month and then punish ourselves playing for hours every day just to earn 1 level. Unlike other addictive games like Farmville, Mafia Wars and Cafe World, you don’t have to pay anything before playing the game. And that’s where the economy comes in the picture. Many video game players love playing free games, not paying up on a a regular basis.
I lost interest playing Aion when I hit level 30 last December because of the Korean-style snail-pace of leveling. I hope NCSoft gets to add more meaningful quests that offer enough XP for each level up requirements. I hate doing quests that require me to repeatedly kill 500 of these monsters or collect 100 of of such and such item drops but at least they give a sense of purpose. It annoys me that to get to level 31, I will have to kills thousands of mobs mindlessly without any real objective but to level up. I am too old to waste my time in doing this numbing hack and slash grinding.

I totally agree with the monotony and time consumption of Aion, and the “grind” factor. I played DDO for a while which offered some great quests with depth, puzzles and a fantastic combat engine. Sadly, it’s lack of players, customization, world activities and world size made it quite pointless.
