Atari launched Star Trek Online on the first week of February. This Cryptic Studios-developed MMORPG is causing much controversy already before its commercial launch. Star Trek Online players are in furor over Atari and Cryptic’s announcement that not only will they charge each player $15 every month just to play the game, but the companies have started selling virtual items or goods to players as well.
Some say this is a travesty of how games should be earning money. Either you sell video games on a subscription basis or you make them free to play but with Item Mall virtual goods for sale. Star Trek Online is trying to do both ways to make money and it doesn’t sit well with Star Trek fans and gamers.
On this upcoming launch of Star Trek Online, players have the option to buy two special races. Interested persons can purchase these unique races using Cryptic Points. Federation Klingons will cost 240 Cryptic Points or $3.00 while Federation Ferengi will cost $80 Cryptic Points or $1.00.
