City of Heroes Freedom: Heroes-Themed MMORPG Goes Free To Play
NCSoft and Paragon Studios announced that after 7 years of subscription-only gameplay, City of Heroes will go Free to Play on the upcoming Issue 21: Convergence update. This upgrade is scheduled for release this 3rd Quarter of 2011. Once this Issue 21 is released, players will have 3 options to play City of Heroes: Free, Premium, or VIP.
City of Heroes MMORPG offers the free-to-play version called Freedom.
City of Heroes, along with World of Warcraft, is one of the pioneer MMORPG titles that are still around up to this day since its debut in 2004. While it is still making a profit, NCSoft and Paragon Studios faced stiff competition from Champions Online and DC Universe. Champions Online already went Free-to-Play too so it’s only smart of them to make City of Heroes F2P.
The free version is called City of Heroes: Freedom and Paragon Studios hopes it will bring back not only new players but also former clients who left. NCSoft is implementing a new money-making policy for this Free-To-Play business model with its Paragon Points System. Seems like RuneScape Free MMORPG is making game turn free-to-play. Players who do not want to pay a monthly subscription fee can instead opt to purchase Paragon Points which then use to buy costumes, character slots and story arcs.
Although it’s already going to be free to play, City of Heroes will limit access and options for non-subscribers. City of Heroes Freedom players will only be able to create two characters where as Premium players get 8 character slots. Free gamers will also only be able to level up to level 50 but they will have full access to all the 45 Hero and Villain maps.
F2P players will also have limited access to game chat channels, auction house and won’t be able to use in-game email, forum participation or Mission Architect. Furthermore, Paragon Studios said non-paying gamers will not be allowed to join supergroups or make one. This is to be fair to the paying subscribers. Gamers who love free games may also check out Champions Online MMORPG Free-to-Play.
I know these severe limitations looks discouraging but if you just want to try another kind of MMORPG where there are no elves or orcs, then City of Heroes: Freedom is a great opportunity to pretend you are a mutant with superpowers!
