Microsoft Office 2010 for Free? Really?
Rumor has it that Microsoft Office 14 is going to be free to use. WHAT?! We cannot believe it nor can be confirm at this point in time that Microsoft Office 2010 is free. Microsoft does not have the reputation of giving away products for free except when they want their products tested by the public like Beta releases of their new softwares. Windows Azure, a cloud computing operating system (or platform, as others prefer to call it) is one example of a “free” (until November only) Microsoft creation.
To get some ideas about this alleged Microsoft Office Free Edition, read the following excerpt taken from the official website of MS:
Office Web Applications, the online companion to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote applications, allow you to access documents from anywhere. You can even simultaneously share and work on documents with others online. View documents across PCs, mobile phones, and the Web without compromising document fidelity. Create new documents and do basic editing using the familiar Office interface. By offering more ways to access files from almost anywhere, Office Web Applications enable you to get things done according to your schedule.
Now, it’s a little bit clearer that the free Microsoft Office 14 is the web apps version. The desktop edition is certainly NOT free as many wish it would be. If the desktop edition will be made free, then for sure millions will be more than willing to download it. But that won’t happen, of course.
Now, this begs the question, “Is Microsoft putting up a fight with Google and the search engine giant’s Google Apps?” We’ll all soon find out the real objective of Microsoft in making this move.
