The tag team of Ryan and Travis Lodermilk from the Windows Phone Dev Podcast managed to land Brandon Watson as a guest on May 8. Watson is the Director of Developer Experience for Microsoft and boy, did he reveal some very juicy details on the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Mango Update. Version 7.5 of Microsoft’s mobile operating system is going to be full of sweet surprises.
After listening to the podcast, it revealed the Windows Phone 7 Mango Update’s new features which include two new Bing elements – Bing Audio and Bing Vision.
- Bing Audio is a program that lets users search for music online using their Windows Phone 7 handsets. It also functions like Shazam app – just hold your phone to any song playing on the radio and Bing Audio will automatically try to identify it!
- Bing Vision is a program that uses your phone’s camera to search services and products. Use this program to scan barcodes, QR codes, books, CDs, DVDs and even product label texts and Bing Vision’s advanced OCR technology will search for them online. It is pretty much like the Free Google Goggles App.
The other new addition to Windows Phone 7 Mango update revealed by Watson is the new native Turn-by-Turn Navigation which provides WP7 smartphone owners a voice guidance system while they drive. It’s good that Microsoft is offering this for free so there’s no longer need to buy a GPS unit like the TomTom XL 340M 4.3″ GPS Navigator for your car.
The last two features for the 7.5 OS Mango update leaked by this podcast are on-device podcast support and SMS Dictation. Windows Phone 7 devices will get native support for podcast streaming without extra softwares. The SMS Dictation is also another attractive new addition. Just use your phone’s built-in mic to compose SMS hands-free! I hope this program gets extended to supporting email and chat applications too.
For those using LG Quantum or other Windows Phone 7 devices, better watch out for the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Mango OS update. Hopefully, Microsoft will release version 7.5 Mango update before 2011 ends.
