Internet Explorer 8 Features Similar to Firefox and Flock

Date Published: March 19, 2009

After downloading and installing Internet Explorer 8 (IE8 download page given in the previous article), Internet Explorer 8 features we have observed that are similar to (but not exactly the same as) Flock and Firefox is the Suggested Site where it automatically suggests popular sites/articles based on your browsing history and other factors. But here’s the deal about the Suggested Sites features in Internet Explorer 8 – it’s memory-hungry.

For one, Microsoft stated that even if Internet Explorer 8 is not running, it will still look for websites where you have RSS subscriptions or Web Slice enabled. For internet surfers with a slow internet connections or slow computers, turning this feature on is not recommended (that is if you’re using Internet Explorer 8). In our Task Manager, we have also seen how Internet Explorer 8 consumed our system memory more than we expected. Running Internet Explorer 8 enabled 4 processes for “Internet Explorer” which accounts for additional background processes by simply running Internet Explorer 8 + enabling Suggested Sites (and other processes we may not know of at this point in time).

If you want to turn off Suggested Sites, Go to Tools and uncheck Suggested Sites menu (Command Bar dropdown menu). There are many features we have observed in the new Internet Explorer 8 that are similar to Firefox and Flock but it will take some time before we can formalize our write-ups on this subject.

We will update everyone with our observations on the new Internet Explorer 8. We are still exploring Internet Explorer 8 in terms of safety, speed and we’re also curious how “Browse With InPrivate” and “Use an Accelerator” can really change our browsing experience.

Thanks for the input. The public release is not too different from the Internet Explorer 8 Beta. Sad to say, the Beta was only a clear preview of the actual stuff.
