AMD Llano Hybrid CPU/GPU Processor vs Intel Atom Processor’s Hold on Laptops and Netbooks
AMD and ATI’s merger will produce AMD Llano Hybrid CPU/GPU Processor. Yup, AMD has announced its new AMD Llano Processor and they said it will be the world’s first with an integrated GPU and CPU in one unit. AMD has even coined a new category for Llano and calls it the “application processing unit.” That’s another new-fangled geek noun for Webster and Wikipedia to add.
Whatever you call it, Llano could give AMD some serious firepower to make inroads in the laptop and netbook market which Intel currently dominates with its Atom processors. If Llano could deliver its promise, it will mean big money for AMD. Intel makes the worst kind of built-in graphics processors and AMD could take advantage of this by making sure Llano can offer better graphics performance. Netbooks of today are notorious for choking-up when playing HD videos and playing 3D games. Most of these Netbooks are sporting Intel Atom processors. Some laptops have Intel Core 2 Duo processors and other CORE processors designed for such. Llano should offer serious HD and 3D gaming capability so that netbook manufacturers will start using it instead of Intel’s power-efficient but graphic-poor Atom processor.
AMD has refused to divulge any explicit details about the Llano but they said it will be a 32nanometer processor wielding a full DirectX-11 compatible GPU with four out-of-order CPU cores! This is smaller than their current offering processors which were all made on a 45nanometer die. They will also be adding new power optimization feature on it. Each out-of-order core will have around 35 million transistors and a 1MB L2. AMD is targeting the Llano’s clock speed for sub-3GHz operation and a power consumption rating of 2.5 to 25 watts. Four cores of these makes the Llano a future speed demon. Add a full DirectX-11 compatible GPU and you have the best processor for mobile computing and gaming. Video games like World of Warcraft as well as flash games including Farmville and Mafia Wars are expected to run more smoothly with AMD Llano hybrid processor.
AMD said the Llano will go on a test this year and will be commercially available starting 2011. Actual release date of AMD Llano Hybrid CPU/GPU Processor will be announced in the near future.
