April 1st or April 1 Virus: Is It Real?
Online news has it that there is going to be a virus that will spread on April Fool’s Day (April 1, 2009). The April 1st virus attack news is in no way intended to scare anyone. We are posting this internet info for the sake of everyone especially our readers. Time will tell if the April 1st virus is real or a hoax just like the Olympic Torch Virus aka Invitation Virus.
The April 1 virus has other names: April 1st virus, Win32/Conficker.C worm (because it will be the 3rd variant of the Conficker worm or virus). Based on our research, Microsoft stated in their site that with Win32/Conficker.B worm infection (an older variant),
“you may not experience any symptoms, or you may experience any of the following symptoms:
- Account lockout policies are being tripped.
- Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), Windows Defender, and Error Reporting Services are disabled.
- Domain controllers respond slowly to client requests.
- The network is congested.
- Various security-related Web sites cannot be accessed.”
If this alleged April’s Fool’s joke is going to be real, it’s going to be one hell of a joke. We do not know at the moment the extent of possible damage the April or April 1st virus will cause but with online viruses getting better and more difficult to remove, we believe it’s always a safe move to keep our systems updated. Our advice: turn Windows auto-update and your antivirus softwares/virus database update functions ON at all times.

With April 1 far ahead as of this writing, let’s hope the April 1st virus won’t be as devastating as the write-ups we read online. I have seen viruses more virulent than the alleged behavior of April 1st virus but at the end of the day, the antivirus softwares can always cope up especially with a preempted attack.
