WP7 Update: Copy and Paste Function in Windows Phone 7 Models Coming in 2011

Date Published: October 13, 2010

Microsoft has finally justified their decision for excluding copy and paste in the first final version release of Windows Phone 7 but they will include it in the 2011 update.

Windows Phone 7 2011 Update Copy and Paste Features

Microsoft CEO Ballmer finally relented and said they will include Copy and Paste Function to Windows Phone 7

Microsoft explained that the ability to highlight text and launch a browser and do “Search” or “Call” is sufficient. As per their official statement:

We try to solve the most common uses for copy and paste via single-tap action. For example, people often want to take an address and view it on a map, highlight a term in the browser and do a search, or copy a phone number to make a call. Instead of the user manually doing a copy and paste in these scenarios, we recognize those situations automatically and make them happen with just one touch.

Critics still lambasted this excuse and Microsoft has caved in to the immense pressure. They are selling Windows Phone 7 as a mobile productive tool and yet they failed to include this feature?

The Copy and Paste function is very important for productivity apps like Mobile Office. You want to write and email you need to re-arrange the sentences, you just highlight the sentences you want to move and copy-paste it. No need to delete and re-type it again!

Another example, you are trying to make a report and you need to put in a very important website URL you just found on the net, you would love to just copy and paste the web address to your document because memorizing http address is not easy!

Copy and Paste is very important for WP7 users since the Windows Phone 7 OS doesn’t support real multi-tasking ability like what the Android OS can do. Third-party apps on Windows Phone 7 cannot run simultaneously!

How am I supposed to copy a text from another third-party app if the Windows Phone 7 OS final version won’t let me copy it in memory or clipboard so I can paste it to another app, whether free or paid!

Good news, Microsoft has relented on this issue. They said they will certainly include the text copy and paste feature on the first update to Windows Phone 7 come early 2011. Very smart of them, if they want to be a viable alternative to Blackberry, iPhone iOS 4 and newer versions, and Android OS, copy and paste is a fundamental need for every smartphone user nowadays.
