Valve Steam Now Available on Mac Platform: New Video Games of 2010 in Stock
After almost 8 years of waiting, Valve’s Steam is coming to the Mac platform. Of course a PC version of Valve Steam is also available. The company made teasers about it a few weeks ago to several websites. But recently, Valve made the official announcement via a press release. Both its game distribution service Steam and game engine Source will be available for Macintosh users starting April 2010. Mac gamers can now enjoy the benefit of Apple’s 2006 shift to Intel processors for its entire desktop and laptop products.
While more expensive than their PC hardware counterpart, Macintosh machines have long been derided for its poor gaming performance. Windows has been the premium choice for hardcore gamers due to its superior DirectX and OpenGL support.
Fortunately, the latest iMacs and MacBook are now equipped with the ideal processor and graphics accelerators necessary for 3D gaming. Apple has also revamped Valve has realized this development and is therefore expanding its services to the Mac enthusiasts. Mac gamers will initially be able to play just a few of Steam’s most popular games. Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve, said
“Steam and Valve’s library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April.” In May, other video games such as Torchlight, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Prince of Persia will be made available.
“Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge.”
