The New Search Engine Cuil: Will it Beat Google?

July 28, 2008 · Filed Under Internet News

Cuil (pronounced as “cool”) is a new search engine that promises to index pages on the world wide web two to three times as much as Google does at present.  For webmasters/bloggers, this might sound like a very good idea.  If Cuil’s promise would be fulfilled, our sites would be indexed more effectively and presumably faster, thus, could increase traffic to our websites because if more pages are indexed, more internet users would be able to find our sites. Well, at least that’s our best hope.  For internet users, this could also mean that they would find more articles about their keyword searches. On the other hand, how good can Cuil filter relevant articles and spam sites is up to now unknown because Cuil is still new in the business.

Who are the people behind Cuil?  The Computerworld reported that a former Google Inc. employee and her husband launched a new search engine on Monday called Cuil, aiming to topple Google by indexing more Web pages than the search giant.

Cuil Inc. in Menlo Park, Calif., is led by Anna Patterson, a former leader of Google’s search index, and her husband, Tom Costello, who researched and developed search engines at Stanford University and IBM. The two, president and CEO, respectively, met at Stanford.

Russell Power, the third co-founder of the group, also worked at Google on search indexing, Web rankings and spam detection. He works as vice president of engineering at Cuil.

In this early stage of Cuil, I am not expecting it to be a good search engine (yet) but I hope the company would become great someday. I am not against any search engine or any of their policies. In fact I love Google and Yahoo because they are the best sources of traffic for my other sites and have kept them alive for many months.  However, I still want to find something new like Cuil, which could benefit more internet users in the long run. Hence, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Cuil will live up to the expectations of many webmasters like this writer.  Try checking out Cuil’s website at www.cuil.com and see for yourself if the new search engine has the potentials to improve what Google, Yahoo, MSN and other established search engines lack. :-)
