iTunes Will Soon Offer Cloud-Based Services to Counter Google Online Music Store

Date Published: July 15, 2010

A reliable source who’s very tight with Apple insiders informed me that the iPhone demigods aren’t letting Google beat them on their own territory. I previously wrote about Google’s ambitious plan to open its own online music store and streaming music business. This new assault by its former ally apparently provoked Steve Jobs and his gang to seriously accelerate Apple’s own plans for transforming its cash-cow iTunes store into a fully-compatible cloud-based enterprise.

Apple iTunes Cloud-Based Version

Apple is planning to upgrade its iTunes software with Cloud-based capability

Apple already has the technology because they bought Lala.com early this year. Lala.com was one of the pioneer American music-streaming company and Apple bought it mainly to get their technology and subsequently shutdown the service. My source says Apple’s cloud strategy includes the following:

  1. Streaming music and movies from Apple’s servers to your computers, devices, etc.
  2. Streaming music and movies from your home computers to your other computers, remote devices, etc.
  3. Wireless iTunes syncing with devices

Basically, all wireless Apple products will be able to stream purchased content directly from Apple’s servers. This eliminates the hassle of using or filling up your own devices’ storage. The second detail says Apple devices that has bought and stored music or videos are actually allowed to stream them to their other devices! The last one finally offers wireless synching with iTunes, no need to use those pesky USB cables!

Apple is still the king of music retailing despite stiff competition from Amazon and Wal-Mart. Should mighty Google joins the fray, expect Apple to fight back aggressively. Apple is already on a roll with its Apple iPad Tablet PC and iPhone 4 blockbuster sales statistics and they are cash-rich enough to hire the best cloud-computing engineers to match Google’s daunted team.
