Apple iPad Tablet PC Sold 120K on Its First Pre-order Day
The almost mythical iPad went on pre-order sale last month and it cemented its cult-icon status by selling an incredible 120,000 units in its first day. This is more jaw-dropping considering Apple enforced a strict 2-unit only purchasing limit for each individual buyer. This translates to almost $ 75 million one-day bonanza for the Cupertino-based company.
I bet Steve Jobs and Tim Cook are giving each other the mighty high-five. The Apple Empire strikes again. They already won another championship game with the iPad even before its commercial release. No other computer, desktop, laptop, netbook or tablet PC has ever achieved this pre-order blockbuster distinction. People willingly spent $75 million for a product that is yet to be delivered to them! Is this out loyalty to Apple or are they just having a foolish crush on the very gorgeous iPad?
The iPad Wi-Fi only edition model seems to have sold the most on the first day. This is most probably because, aside from being cheaper, they will be the first batch to be delivered on April 3. The most surprising thing though, is the report that buyers were equally split in purchasing the 16GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, models. I was wrong to expect people to choose the cheapest $499 16GB. Customers didn’t mind spending $100 or $200 more just to get extra storage space.
