Logitech may not be making much money on their joint venture with Google but they still are very upbeat. They announced at Google I/O conference that their Logitech Revue Google TV product will receive an Over-The-Air update this coming summer which includes Android 3.1 Honeycomb OS and Android Market. Ashish Arora, Vice-President and General Manager for Logitech Digital Home Group confirmed this again from his official blog.
A previous article on this site talked Android OS 3.1 Update Released for Verizon Motorola Xoom starting May 12. Apparently, Google is not neglecting their struggling Google TV project and has given Logitech another ray of light with this promise of a summer release of Android 3.1 Honeycomb for the Logitech Revue.
This news is a very important development because app-makers can now create the same software products for both Honeycomb tablet and Google TV products. They will be using the same SDK for Honeycomb 3.1 so it’s going to be ‘write-once, ship-to-many’ for them. The arrival of native Android Market support for Logitech Revue is also a big boost to the product.
Having Google Android Market will most probably attract more buyers for the Logitech Revue. Sales of this Google TV product have been unimpressive since its debut last year. Many prospective customers complained about the lack of Android Market and they shied away from it. Come July or August, Logitech will hopefully sell more units once Android Market is loaded on all Revues.
Android Market means buyers will soon be able to download thousands of free apps and games and use them with their big-screen TV. The beauty and power of Honeycomb OS also will make it more desktop-like experience rather than a glorified mobile version. Logitech Revue owners should keep reminding Google’s official forum to deliver this promise!
To all Logitech Revue users, watch out for the Android OS 3.1 Update (Honeycomb OS) release date over-the-air this June 2011. Since Google confirmed that the Honeycomb OS is coming to Google TV, expect this Android 3.1 update on the Sony Internet TV too.
