MeBook Touch: Cheap 7″ Color E-Reader and Media Player

It’s been a long since I wrote about cheap tablets that are good alternatives to expensive branded products. I would like to recommend to you another worthy option to the Kindle or Nook. Chinavasion is selling a sub-$100 color LCD type e-reader called MeBook Touch. Check out this link,

MeBook Touch Color eReader Price and Review

Don't have enough money to buy the Kindle or Nook? Don't worry, just read my article and you will learn how to buy a good but much cheaper alternative!

The MeBook Touch 7-inch Color LCD e-Reader uses a resistive display instead of a capacitive one that is why it’s one of the cheapest eReaders. Although resistive, the MeBook Touch is sensitive enough for casual book reading and movie or music playback operations. It’s got a decent 600MHz processor and running on custom OS that’s exclusively geared for offline use. Yep, MeBook Touch has no Wi-Fi or 3G support. It’s clearly created as an electronic reader and portable media player.

While it doesn’t have any way to connect to the internet, the MeBook Touch can be loaded with books, songs and movies via the USB cable or the TF microSD card slot. I know it’s a hassle but considering its low price of $96.92, you shouldn’t be expecting WiFi or 3G on this device! It is even cheaper than the Velocity Micro R101 Android Cruz 7″ Reader. Just be patient to download contents for it using desktop computers or laptops.

Based on my hands-on experience, the MeBook Touch’s 7-inch display did respond promptly to one finger. It’s got a pretty clear 800x480p resolution and I was also able to read a novel on it under direct sunlight, thanks to its anti-glare coating. This device can run e-book files like TXT, PDF, EPUB, CHM, HTML, PDB, and UMD. I loaded it with Kindle books and I was able to read them all on the MeBook Touch without any problem. Next test, I loaded it up with MP3 songs and they played without any hitch too. As per the manufacturer’s specs sheet, this eReader can play MP3, APE, FLAC, WMA, WMV audio files and MPEG2, MPEG4, DAT, VOB, AVI, DivX, Xvid, MKV and PMP movie files.

I tested the MeBook Touch mini HDMI port and played some JPEG photo slideshow on my 32-inch LG TV and it played correctly too. Movie playback on this eReader is smooth even when playing 720p HD video. I only hated the wimpy built-in mono speaker. Thankfully, the manufacturer included a 3.5mm audio jack so you can use external speakers or headphones on the MeBook Touch.

Battery-wise, the MeBook Touch comes with a 2000 mAh Lithium Ion battery that is rated to last up to 6 hours when watching video. If you only use this device for reading books, its rated battery life is extended to 10 hours. Good enough for me! I highly suggest you order the MeBook Touch now. I know there are cheaper Android 2.1 tablets out there that can also do this device’s functions but believe me, those cheap 7-inch Android tablet models won’t be able to play smooth 720p videos like what the MeBook Touch can do.
