Apple has just released the beta version of FaceTime for Mac

At the just-concluded “Back To The Mac” press event, Apple announced that FaceTime is being ported to work with Mac OS X computers. Now it is possible for iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4 owners to voice call iMac and MacBook Air owners!

You can get the beta version of FaceTime for Mac at http://www.apple.com/mac/facetime/. Take note though, this software requires you to have at least Mac OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard installed in your machine. It’s best for the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion but you’ll have to wait for the release of the new Mac Lion operating system in 2011 to maximize its full potential.

You will need an Apple ID and an email address to use FaceTime for Mac. You can call friends directly from your Address Book or Contacts list. If you want to video call your friend on her iPhone, just click her phone number. If you want to call her iPod Touch 4 or Mac computer, click her email address!

There’s a full screen mode in the FaceTime for Mac which is really good because FaceTime now can use either the front-facing camera or the better 5.0 megapixel camera of the iPhone 4. It’s going to be delightful experience to video call my sisters in my 27-inch screen and see just how big their pores can be!

With FaceTime for Mac installed, your laptop or new iMac will still ring if somebody tries to call you even though FaceTime isn’t running. If you don’t want to be disturbed, just turn FaceTime off in Preferences.
