While the HTC Desire HD was a multimedia powerhouse, the HTC Desire Z is more geared toward business professionals. The HTC Desire Z comes with a full QWERTY keyboard that uses a unique and cleverly designed pop-out hinge, which was not used in HTC Desire HD . The name of this phone is from the spring-loaded Z-hinge that lets it fires open the QWERTY keyboard.
HTC also was able to create a 4-liner keyboard that surprising works well. This space saving feature made it possible for this phone to be thin and light. Features-wise, the HTC Desire Z is a step lower than its more expensive brother, the HTC Desire HD (read our HTC Desire HD Review in the linked article).
Inside the aluminum/plastic mold of HTC Desire Z is an 800 MHz Qualcomm SnapDragon processor. HTC also used a 3.7-inch Super LCD display because they said Samsung wasn’t shipping enough AMOLED screens (read our report on Samsung Wave II S8530).
For comparison purposes, another step down from the HTC Desire HD is that the HTC Desire Z only sports a 5-megapixel camera with only one LED flash. Too bad, this phone will still ship out with Android OS 2.1 instead of the latest Android OS 2.2 Froyo version. On the brighter side, this phone can still record 720p HD videos. It has all the necessary connectivity features. Wifi, Bluetooth, HSDPA, and A-GPS. It can play Flash and HD movies without any problem. The 512MB RAM helps it do nicely with mobile games and other resource-hungry apps too.
Aside from having a QWERTY keyboard, the HTC Desire Z’s other notable feature is the new HTC Sense UI that comes with it. The new HTC Sense software makes it now possible for this phone to boot in less than 8 seconds. The HTC Desire Z will debut first in Europe this year with a retail price of US $550.
Reports also indicate that the HTC Desire Z’s release date will be on October 18 (Amazon UK), priced at £499. Some sources even claimed that if you pre-order HTC Desire Z now, you can even get a discounted rate of £430 on Play.com and ship date is scheduled on the 11th of this month.
