Philippine-based Cherry Mobile announced via their official Facebook page that they are now selling their latest Eclipse 2 Windows Mobile 6.5 phone for only 9,990 pesos (~US$225)! It’s the new version of their popular Eclipse Windows Mobile 6.5 OS handset that still sells for the same price of 9,990 pesos on retail. The Cherry Mobile Eclipse 2 offers the same features of its predecessor except for some minor changes.
The most noticeable update is the new Smart Touch User Interface. As per Cherry Mobile, this new UI offers better navigation than the original Eclipse. Cherry Mobile did not indicate in their promo if the Eclipse 2 is upgradeable to Windows Phone 7. I suspect, it isn’t.
True, they still run on the same Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system but the Cherry Mobile Eclipse 2 promises to be more user-friendly. Aside from the new Smart Touch UI, this new model also gets a higher 3.0 megapixel camera compared to the old Eclipse which only has a 2.0 MP camera. It still uses the same MediaTek MT6516 416MHz CPU and the RAM is still 128MB.
Just like its older sibling, the Cherry Mobile Eclipse 2 still supports DUAL-SIM operation.
The Wi-Fi is still b/g and no Wireless-N but Bluetooth is now version 2.1 and the Eclipse 2 now supports GPS. I’m disappointed that Cherry Mobile still used the same 3.2-inch resistive touchscreen display on the Eclipse 2.
My Android 2.1 Samsung Galaxy 5 i5503 cost me only 10,500 pesos and yet it already has a true capacitive screen! If you are not too dependent on the Windows experience, ditch this and buy the Samsung Galaxy 5 i5503.
Anyway, the Cherry Mobile Eclipse 2 is still a good buy for those of you who aren’t comfortable with Android. You can buy the Eclipse 2 at most cellphone stores in Metro Manila, Philippines. Cherry Mobile said they will soon expand the availability of the Eclipse 2 to other provinces before the year ends.
