Microsoft Virtual Earth Overview and Review
The The concept behind Microsoft Virtual earth is very much similar to Google Earth – it provides a rich information about the planet’s surface and maps of such. The first difference between Microsoft Virtual Earth and Google Earth is that the former requires Microsoft Silverlight 2. It won’t really be of any use without this plugin installed.
Also, Virtual Earth provides graphics in different formats – 2D, 3D, and Bird’s eye view. You can also see maps in Road view and Aerial view.
Personally though, the Virtual earth lacks a sense of realism. Its true to its name – virtual – because all you can see are image recreations using CGI. It does not show actual pictures of buildings and other infrastructures unlike in Google Earth 5 where users are even encouraged to upload real-life photos of buildings and other edifices for a more real-life experience of the virtual tour, thus, providing richer information and better user experience.
For me, using Microsoft Virtual Earth is like playing an MMORPG where characters and entities are recreated purely by computers. You can’t even take a good look at the objects because the zoom function is limited. This software is still in the early stage of development though. We’re hoping to see here a more improved version of Virtual earth in the coming months. For now, Google Earth 5 wins the competition in terms of features and overall functionality.
