Intel Plans to Release New Processors, Lowers Prices for Desktop CPU Products
Fans of lightning-fast processors should be happy to know that Intel is set to release new and more powerful desktop CPU models on the third-quarter of this year. Intel isn’t going passively resting on its laurels, they intend to keep their wide lead over AMD. Intel’s Core line of processors are setting pace for innovative CPU design and most OEM desktop manufacturers now prefer them over cheaper AMD’s Athlon products. The new upcoming processors from Intel will be replacing older models which will be phased out. As a final shove to clear its old inventory, Intel is reducing the prices of all existing processors. Please refer to the image below to see these discounted prices.
The new processors which will be launched starting this July will include the six-core Core i7-970 which will be priced at $885, the quad-core Core i5-760 with core frequencies of 2.8 GHz will sell for $205, and the quad-core Core i5-870S that’s designed for small-form factor PCs will be priced at $351. These prices are for volume order of thousand-unit tray quantities. Don’t expect to get the same price from your favorite retailer which will obviously put a mark-up on these prices.
I am not really a big fan of Intel processors primarily because of their costly price tags. The gaming PCs at my computer shop are all powered by Athlons except for one which I use for video editing. The only Intel machine I have is a Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66 GHz which is perfect for video editing and heavy Photoshop jobs. I admit, Intel still makes the best processors for multimedia editing, AMD’s CPUs are not meant for professional graphic artists like me. Now that Intel is discounting their current CPU catalog, I might buy a Core i5 or Core i7 workstation before Christmas. I’ve been a good boy this year – I ought to have a smashing gift!
