AMD Fusion APU Ontario and Zacate Processors Demoed at IFA 2010 in Germany

Date Published: September 11, 2010

The IFA 2010 in Berlin tech show wasn’t all about tablet computers or 3D technology. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) also wowed attendees with a surprise demonstration of their two latest Fusion APU processors. AMD showcased their Zacate and Ontario APU to the delight of the audience who has been clamoring for a preview of the company’s new APU technology. APU is the new term for single-architecture processors that has embedded CPU and GPU with support for HD and 3D processing.

AMD has been developing the Fusion APU family of products with a radical approach to processor design. Fusion will deliver powerful serial, parallel and visual computing abilities for mobile computers and gadgets. The single-die processor design of the APU will combine with serial and parallel cores and other hardware accelerators to provide a compact dynamo to power netbooks and smartphones. HD, 3D movies and video games will be the main beneficiary of this breakthrough APU design.

Software developers will also be able to enhance their product’s user experience by either using the ATI Stream SDK or the Microsoft DirectCompute API. The speed boost inherent to a single-die APU means faster application processing.

End users will experience faster app or game performance on their mobile computer or smart phone. AMD announced earlier that they will start shipping the Zacate and Ontario APUs by 2011.

These two APU chips will start mass production next month and they are built on Globalfoundries 32nm manufacturing processes.

AMD Ontario and Zacate features two x86 Bobcat cores, for processing, as well as the Integrated DDR3 memory controller, a Unified Video Decoder (UVD) and the aforementioned DirectX 11 GPU.

AMD Zacate has a TDP (thermal design power) of 18W and will be perfect for desktop all-in-ones and notebooks. Ontario, on the other hand, will be used in netbooks, tablet computer or smartphones because its TDP of just 9W is a major asset!
