Add More Storage to Your PC by Using an External Hard Drive
Adding more storage media to a computer could be a painstaking task. If you are using a desktop computer, you can choose to use a spare hard disk/hard drive and physically install it in a hard disk slot in your casing. For busy individuals, this may not be the most ideal setup. For laptop computers, this task becomes more difficult because there is no other way to increase the storage capacity of laptops but to install a new hard drive with a higher storage capacity.
However, there is solution for problems like this – use an external hard drive. Whatever is your PC – desktop or laptop computer, this could be the best option for you.
There are two types of external hard drives we know and have tried – the hard disk enclosure for IDE drives and the ultraslim hard disk enclosure for SATA drives.
A photo of our aluminum SATA + IDE hard disk enclosure (combo) is shown below. We have added our old 40GB Seagate hard drive (which contains our priceless data in the last 5 years). It can be used used in any desktop or laptop computer with USB ports. This helped us increase our storage media a bit (because 40GB is not much additional disk space these days) but it’s worth getting one if you need an external hard drive which you can carry around especially with your laptop computers.
There is an ultraslim version of this hard disk enclosure – some have SATA drives in them usually having the followign capacities: 160GB, 320GB and even 1 Terabytes. However, in adding an external hard drive, we would like to offer some suggestions:
Make sure your processor can handle the additional task of running an additional hard drive (you should have a minimum of Dual Core 2.0 Ghz processor or its equivalent). A well-ventilated (or airconditioned) room is also needed. An external hard drive produces heat and this additional heat should be dissipated properly to avoid overheating. A friend’s laptop overheated because of the lack of ventilation. Also, if you are not using the external hard drive, be sure to detach it from your computer to save some electricity.
