Google Me Social Networking Site: Google Joins Zynga Games vs Facebook

Date Published: July 27, 2010

Google Me, the next-gen social networking from the internet sensation, Google, is actually real. A source close to Zynga officials has leaked that advertising behemoth Google secretly invested at least $100 million dollars to Zynga last month. While both Google and Zynga refused to confirm this rumor, multiple sources have confirmed this deal. Another source said Google itself and not its investment arm, Google Ventures, invested between $100 to 200 million to the world’s biggest social gaming company. This undercover move is apparently in preparation for the launch of Google Games later this year or early 2011.

Zynga is famous for creating Web 2.0 social games like FarmVille, Mafia Wars, Cafe World and other addictive Facebook games. Zynga has reportedly earned $350 million in revenues for the first half of 2010. A very impressive feat since half of that income is already operating profits. The social gaming outfit’s CEO has even publicly predicted at least $1.0 billion revenues for 2011. Google, ever on the lookout for good investment opportunity, saw the outstanding financial balance sheet of Zynga and has therefore bought into it last June. The online ads giant is also aiming to use Zynga’s catalog of famous games as a foundation for its planned Google Games platform. Facebook still leads the social networking sector but Google aims to build on the strength of social gaming to shift the social graph to their favor. Their Orkut social networking site failed to dislodge Facebook but Google strategists are again plotting another social platform called Google Me. The introduction of Google Games later this year is perceived to be the first step towards this goal.

The strategic partnership between Zynga and Google also aims to replace PayPal. Zynga is reportedly one of the biggest single-clients of PayPal. Google’s investment on the social gaming company might persuade them to also consider using Google Checkout as payment gateway for addicted FarmVille and Mafia Wars customers! Google is already rumored to be launching its own online music store and their entry to social gaming just confirms that Google is resolute in its objective of dominating the web not only in terms of search and advertising. Apple is already feeling the heat from the Mountain View, California company. Now Facebook should again consider Google as their primary competition. They may have beaten Orkut before but Google has already snagged Zynga into its arms. Remember that Facebook only managed to attract many users beginning 2008 because most of them got addicted to Zynga games!
