Acer Will Ship 1 Million Google Chrome OS Netbooks This Year

Date Published: February 12, 2010

Microsoft must be in severe discomfiture right now. Acer, one of its staunchest OEM partners has defected and joined the Google camp. The revolutionary browser-based operating system is set to release on the third-quarter of this year but as early as today, January 25, 2010, Acer made its commitment to support it. The Taiwanese giant is in close collaboration with Google to manufacture netbooks which are distinctively tailored for the Chrome OS. Acer has confidently disclosed they want to ship out 1 million Chrome netbooks when the Google Chrome OS is released later this year.

Jim Wong, Acer’s President for IT products, told Bloomberg, “For Chrome, we’re aggressively pursuing to become one of the first so there’s a change to the Microsoft-Intel environment.

By getting the support of Acer, Google’s Chrome OS will debut late this year with a surefire big bang! Acer is one of the world’s biggest netbook manufacturers and next to HP, the 2nd biggest PC maker. The Taiwanese company is bent on beating HP to become the undisputed leader in desktop, laptop and netbook categories. Acer is betting big that Google’s Chrome operating system is not only free but will be much more user-friendly than Linux. They are focused on reducing the price of their netbooks and Microsoft License fees aren’t helping cut-down cost. The Linux option has largely been a failure because people found it mystifying and difficult. Acer is hoping that Chrome OS will prove to be more user-friendly than Linux and thus have more buyers of their cheap netbook units.

It’s all about profits and Acer is right to get out of its Windows-dependency. It’s a very ambitious company that wants to maximize its earning potential and global leadership. Microsoft is known for punishing OEM manufacturers who displeases it but I think Acer is big enough to warrant an excuse from Steve Ballmer & company. Microsoft has been tolerating OEM partners who ship Linux-flavored netbooks before and I expect the Windows Godfather just to seethe in silent fury from Acer’s defection.

By supporting Google’s free and open-source Chrome OS, Acer might inspire other major netbook-makers to follow suit. More companies openly supporting Chrome OS will drum up public curiosity! Watch out for these Acer netbooks and possibly newer Acer Notebooks with Google Chrome OS when they are released in the market.
