Google China Cyber Attacks: Google Says ‘NO’ to Chinese Government’s Censorship
Google China has received numerous cyber attacks pushing Google to a decision that might increase the tension between the American and Chinese government. According to Microsoft’s press release, Microsoft admitted Google being hacked through Internet Explorer’s security weakness. After the organized cyber attacks or hacking of the Gmail accounts (Google email accounts) in China, Google traced the hacking trail to have originated from China itself.
What’s interesting is that it is not a random Gmail hacking but a plotted intrusion to Chinese human rights activists’ Gmail Accounts and 20 foreign companies’ online communications. As mentioned by our fellow writer in a past article on this site, these “Google cyber attacks” or “Google hacks” may have been done by Chinese government spies. Although, Google did not accuse the Chinese government for this hacking because of the lack of evidence to support it, Google made a bold move to retaliate against China.
Since 2006, Google China followed the communist countries internet policies in order for them to infiltrate the market. However, after the Google hacking or Google cyber attacks and alleged surveillance exercise in December 2009, Google will no longer agree with the “censorship policy” of China. Google even threatened to withdraw from China if the government will insist its strict policies.
Google’s threat to pullout of China raised mixed reactions from people. Some of the Chinese citizens agreed with Google for taking its stand against the communist government. Others criticized Google for being stubborn and it’s better for them to keep out so Baidu, Chinese search engine, could dominate the market.
Google cyber attacks gave the possibility for Google to leave the Chinese online market. However, Google has to think twice before making this decision because China has the most number of internet users. China’s motto is “capitalism without democracy” and it will not change its policies for Google being a small company in China.
