Webcam Not Compatible With GTalk: Incompatibility Issues in GTalk

Google Talk or Gtalk is the latest free voice and video chat software created by Google. After using it in my two laptops – Lenovo G410 Laptop and Acer TravelMate 6292 Notebook, I have found out that some webcam models do not work with GTalk.

For the Acer Travelmate 6296 (with built-in 1.3MP webcam), there is apparently no problem. However, for the Lenovo laptop (without a built-in webcam), soem problems could arise if you will not buy a webcam recommended by Google. For one, my A4Tech 5MP webcam  does not work with GTalk. When I try to test my settings using the Voice and Video Chat in Gmail, the browser crashes. This is true for all the browsers installed in my units (Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer 8 and Flock). These browsers sudenly close and declare that they have crashed due to an unexpected error whenever I use GTalk from within Gmail. The desktop version of GTalk also shows anomalous behavior. The Video and Chat does not work with A4Tech 5MP webcam.

With all the resources Google has, this is a terrible problem. Incompatibility issues with many webcam models is definitely its downside. I also suspect this is one of the reasons why Google Mail is down most of the time because it cannot properly load scripts or functions needed to support the webcam. In my case, if I cannot load Gmail properly, I  choose the Basic HTML mode so I can still read my emails. But what good are GTalk or Gmail’s voice and video chat functions if they cannot serve their purposes? Google has to do something about this because they have good products that are starting to bother users wordlwide because of minor bugs.
