Google Buzz: Gmail’s Social Networking App Ala Facebook

Date Published: February 12, 2010

Since Facebook recently announced that they are developing their own email system, Google retaliated with the release of its own social networking application, Google Buzz. This open-source social networking was released a few days ago and is tightly integrated with Gmail. I already have it on my Google Gmail account and I am excited to have tested this new app this week. My conclusion: the Google Buzz App is an exciting new feature in Gmail. Game Apps could be on their way to your Google Mail accounts after this development (suspicion).

Google Buzz aims to offer a better method to share photos, links, videos, and events with your Gmail contacts. It maybe not be as deep as Facebook’s offerings but Google Buzz is heading the right way. Google made the right move integrating this new social networking app on the very popular Gmail platform. Behind Microsoft and Yahoo Mail, Gmail is now the world’s 3rd-most popular webmail applications. It is estimated that Gmail users now numbers more than 200million around the globe. It was 2008 and 2009’s fastest rising email service in terms of growth. Google is exploiting this huge established user base to implement Google Buzz.

Moreover, Google also announced that Google Buzz will be available for Android phones like Google Nexus One superphone and iPhone platforms. The online giant is aggressively pushing Google Buzz to smartphone users knowing very well that most people use their smart phones daily to connect to Facebook or MySpace. The mobile version of Google Buzz has an enticing feature, it is going to offer smart phone users accurate local content depending on their area. Google has also updated its Google Maps for most smart phone models including those on Windows Mobile or Symbian OS. The new Google Maps will show the user’s exact location in real time so that friends and contacts will know where he is.

Google Buzz will also be offered to organizations and schools that use Google Apps. I have no doubt that this new social networking venture by Google will recruit converts from Facebook and MySpace. Google is promising a more clean-cut social experience. They have implemented automatic filtering of spams on Google Buzz. If and when Google buzz integrates some famous time-wasting games like FarmVille or Pet Society, it might present a serious threat to Facebook’s domination.
