Xbox 360 Will Soon Support External USB-Memory Storage for Games
A leaked technical paper from a top Microsoft software development engineer is hinting a possible update for the Xbox 360 console that will enable it to support third-party USB external drives (flash drives). If it is true, this is a most important improvement and will make it at par with the Sony PlayStation console which has had USB drive storage support since 2006. The document stated that due to the advancement of high-capacity and high-throughput of USB mass storage devices, it is time for the Xbox 360 to be compatible with them.
Players will soon be able to store and load saved games via external USB flash and hard drives. Right now, users can only do this on the Xbox 360 hard drive and Microsoft-issued flash drives. Some USB external drives today come in Terabyte-size which is a huge improvement for Xbox 360 owners. The problem with Microsoft’s memory card is its maximum capacity of 512MB which is too small for players who download and save large files. Even the internal hard drive of the Xbox 360 gets filled out quickly by players addicted to buying multiple video games.
This feature will supposedly happen through a software update that will be released this spring of 2010. The said patch will also let players save any downloaded Xbox Live Arcade Games, Indie Games, Games on Demand, game updates, and other game-related contents to any USB storage device. This development is Microsoft’s answer to the increasing popularity of digital downloads on Xbox consoles. However, the document did categorically say that the software patch will not let people save video files like movies and TV shows such as those provided by NetFlix (which will also support the Nintendo Wii console). By the way, check out the Nintendo Wii Motion Plus Controller. You might get interested in buying the product along with Sony PlayStation Move Controller, the PS3 motion controller.
