Xbox 360 vs PlayStation 3 (PS3) Sales: Xbox 360 Wins!

January 8, 2009 · Filed Under Xbox 360

The battle between gaming consoles heats up as Microsoft released a report on the sales of Xbox 360 for 2008 claiming that Xbox 360 sold more than 28 million units in 2008, beating the sale of Playstation 3 (PS3) by 8 million units. The Xbox LIVE community also has 17 million plus members despite the fact that Xbox Live has been down several times last year.

In terms of global sales, figures released by Microsoft indicated that “Xbox 360 is experiencing record-setting sales around the globe, particularly in Japan and Europe, nearly doubling market share in these key territories. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) specifically, Xbox 360 has now sold more than 8 million units, extending its lead over the PS3 by more than 1 million units.” In a related story, research shows that majority of children play video games in the US, which largely contributes to the worldwide success of Xbox 360 consoles.

Xbox 360 Game Consoles Beats Sony PS3 in Sales in 2008

Some of the most popular arcade games of Microsoft Xbox LIVE at the end of 2008 are as follows:

  1. Worms
  2. A Kingdom for Keflings
  3. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
  4. Castle Crashers
  5. Puzzle Arcade

I’m just wondering if Microsoft Xbox 360 will be able to maintain this lead at the end of 2009 when Nintendo DSi will have been launched worldwide. Let’s wait and see if results will change.

    err… Xbox 360 (dec ‘05 WORLDWIDE) = 27m Units.
    PS3(mar ‘07 WORLDWIDE) 20m Units.

20/1.9 = PS3 10.5m Units/year.(we AREN’T in march yet), so in march this year, PS3 completes 2 years WORLDWIDE(not talking about america, but WORLDWIDE) and will have 21m Units sold.
    27/3.1 = 360 8.6m Units/year.(we HAVE PASSED december 08) 360 already passed 3 years and 2 months.

    Xbox 360 sells more?

  3. Improvements in the New Xbox Live Update | Xbox 360/Xbox Live on February 5th, 2009 11:19 pm

[...] The new Xbox Live update was released on Feb 3, 2009. The update to Xbox Live is only limited to registered subscribers with Gold subscriptions. For other subscriptions, the new Xbox Live update won’t work. Here is a brief explanation on this one: “There are two levels of service for Xbox LIVE. The Silver level is free and lets you download content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace, chat with friends, and share your gamer profile and achievements with other users. The Gold Level is a paid service with all of the Silver level benefits, plus with the ability to play multiplayer games online against other members of the Xbox LIVE community, create parties and join games with friends, and, if you’re a Netflix member, even watch streaming movies right on your Xbox 360.” [...]

  5. Whats Funny Is on April 3rd, 2009 7:29 pm

What is funny about these numbers are that the 28 million units that this post is claiming were sold in just 2008 were actually the life span numbers for the system and not just during 2008

    Retail availability = November 22, 2005 (details)
Units sold = Worldwide: 27.93 million (as of January 14, 2009

Wiki is your friend might wanna use it before you make an add outta yourself.

and just to be fair, here is the ps3 side of things.

    Retail availability = November 11, 2006 (details)
Units sold = 21.3 million (as of December 31, 2008)

released 354 days after the 360, and numbers are based 15 days before the numbers posted for the 360, yes it is less then the 360 for the life span of the system, but like i said, that’s 354 days after the 360 release. How many 360’s sold in those 354 days. hmm so unless the 360 sold less then what 7 million consoles in the year of 2006 that means that the 2 systems have been on par with each other since the ps3 was released. and lets not forget about the beautiful RROD that retailers are claiming is 33% of the market. That sales are automatically going to go up 33% of the actual number. sorry… but 360 didn’t win. I find it mildly amusing when people only look at the numbers they wanna see and not the whole picture.

To be honest it doesnt really matter which console sells better… its who sells more games… and in the game dept 360 is kicking PS3’s butt.

Any of you ladies from the PS3 side “figure in” the Japanese government’s tariff penalty on the Xbox 360?
What if, let’s just say for kicks, that the Japanese gov’t were to stay out of the mix… what do you think would happen to sales of Xbox consoles in Japan? Maybe go thru the roof?
Kids are kids… they just want the most interesting games available that they (or their parents) can afford.
Take the tariffs away from the Xbox and see what happens…

Man whoever posted this article should learn to read and understand what they are reading.

The PS3 is doing great against the 360 even though the 360 had year’s lead time, and the gap between the two figures closing even further, this despite the fact that the PS3 is more expensive (though not in the long run, xbox live, hdd costs etc..)

I have both systems, both play great games, the exclusives are better on the PS3 and PSN is not full of annoying kids like Live is.

you know that some people buy two 360s so that when one goes they have another. alot of people only buy the 360 because its ‘cheap’, and therefore more people on the online. but the 360 is already out of date. and i read something funny in a review about 360 or PS3, they stated that the 360 uses all of its processing ablity whereas the PS3 only uses 1/3. but if you look at multiplatform games, its pretty much the same on both, so really, the PS3 is the only one with potencial that your not going to have to pay extra for. Microsoft dont care about gaming. they only care about getting as much money out of as many people as they can.
