The PlayStation Portable 2 (PSP 2) project is still alive! Despite recent poor sales for the portable handheld due to stiff competition from Nintendo and smartphones, Sony announces they are still bringing the next generation of their portable gaming device by the end of 2011. Codenamed the Sony PSP NGP, it will feature a industry-leading quad-core ARM Cortex processor!
While it is not the rumored PlayStation Phone, the PSP NGP packs impressive specs as detailed by Sony’s press release. The PSP NGP gaming console goes beyond entertainment and gaming. Sony is incorporating both Wi-Fi and 3G for it so that it also serves as a perfect mobile social connectivity tool.
Boasting a huge 5-inch OLED multi-touch screen, the PSP NGP’s Quad-Core ARM 9 processor and discreet graphics accelerator will deliver top-notch gaming and HD movie and surround audio processing. Android phones and the iPhone have won millions of gamers to their platform by offering them multi-touch based gaming. Sony has seen the light and wants to woo back old PSP players to the NGP by offering the same gesture-based features!
Other new features in the PSP NGP are a built-in GPS, location-based software called NEAR which lets players know if and what their friends are playing, six-axis motion sensing system and dual camera (front and rear).
Updates on Sony PSP NGP release date will be announced here once the schedule is announced by the manufacturers.
