Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC Review: Cheaper but Better than Apple iPad
Which is better? The Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC or the Apple iPad? Before we compare Notion Ink Adam and Apple iPad Tablet PC, let us greet you all, Kung Hei Fat Choi! This year is the Chinese Year of the Metal Tiger but in the tech world, 2010 can also be called the Year of the Tablet PC. India-based company Notion Ink unveiled a prototype of its much- anticipated Adam Tablet PC at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress this year. The biblically-named Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC is a joy to witness because it is packed with considerable features that the much-hyped Apple iPad Tablet PC lacks. The most obvious of these advantages is the revolutionary hybrid 10-inch PixelQi transflective touch screen display. This astonishing display of the Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC has three functions; it can run in full color, black & white, and e-paper mode. The PixelQi 1024×758 display provides optimal benefits for viewing high-resolution photos and videos but can also go on ultimate power-saving mode when reading or writing plain documents.
Despite good Apple iPad Reviews, our Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC review remains in favor of the latter. This is because another great advantage of the Adam Tablet over the iPad is its built-in autofocus 3-megapixel camera! I just can’t understand why Apple failed to include a camera for the iPad Tablet PC. This is a very feature that every modern portable computer should have. Notion Ink also trumps Apple by including an expansion SD-card slot in their Adam Tablet. The $499 dollar version of the iPad has only 16GB storage and for me it’s just miniscule but would have been easily remedied by including a memory card slot on the iPad. The other features which make the Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC superior to the iPad are the HDMI output that transfers full 1080p HD video files, AGPS, proximity sensor, accelerometer, and Touchpad. And did I mention that this tablet will fully support Adobe Flash 10? Ha, Apple is really stupid to keep on refusing the Flash Player. How the hell are you going to watch embedded Youtube videos and movies on your iPad? While you can watch Youtube videos using the pre-installed app, Youtube videos and Flash movies/objects embedded on web pages won’t load. Based on our combined experiences here, Apple’s lack of Flash support is one of our main complaints. Yup we love our iPad overall but the lack of Adobe Flash support is one of the things we’re not comfortable not having (considering its high price).
On the other hand, the Adam Tablet also boasts up to 160 hours of battery life if the backlight for the display is turned off. Otherwise on regular use, its battery life can last up to 16 hours which is still better than the 10 hours offered by the iPad Tablet PC.
There is more. The Adam Tablet is going to be a real computer powered by a dual-core 1 Ghz Intel processor, unlike Apple’s A4 iPad chip which is too slow to support multitasking. The Adam Tablet will fully support multitasking because of the desktop-like dual core processors and gaming on it will be excellent because the Adam Tablet will be armed with the potent nVidia Tegra 2 GPU! The iPad runs fast on the iPhone OS 3.2 but it can never really support full desktop applications like what the Adam Tablet is capable of. Notion Ink confirmed that their product is going to support Ubuntu, Android OS 2, and Google Chrome OS. The prototype displayed at the Mobile World Congress was running on Android OS 2.1 but I bet this tablet computer is competent enough to run Microsoft Windows 7.
And lastly, Notion Ink has officially confirmed that their Adam Tablet PC will retail for $327 for the basic unit and up to $800 for the high-end model. Price and feature-wise the Adam Tablet is the clear winner. It just trounces the iPad and because of this, I have canceled my March pre-order for the $499 iPad. I will wait instead for April when Notion Ink starts shipping the very impressive Adam Tablet PC. Watch out for the Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC release date or schedule in your area. We’ll post more updates about this powerful tablet PC when it hits store shelves in the US, Canada and Europe.

Do you guys know if the 3g version will connect by Bluetooth just like the archos tablet?
This won’t be able to run Windows 7 because Microsoft have no interest right now to port it to Arm (which is at the heart of the Tegra 2 SOC). In theory, the dual A9 Arm cores should be more than powerful enough though, especially when coupled with the extra processors handling specific tasks like video decoding and graphics.
You have a slight error in your article regarding the Pixel Qi screen; it will have a standard resolution of 1024 x 600 with other sizes and resolutions to follow sometime later. This was chosen most likely because it’s the easiest to retrofit in existing 10.1″ models (like netbooks).
Some errors on this article. iPhone OS 4 is now multi tasking capable. Those who criticized Apple on this probably don’t realize that instead of just implementing something half ass, like most do, let’s do it right the first time! Also, can’t play YouTube? Seriously… there’s an app for that which surprises me that you, as a reviewer, don’t know. Flash is a pain in the ass anyways and I look forward to HTML5. Also, the dual core aspect, while cool, means nothing if not accessed properly by the apps, system, etc. While there are limitations on the iPad, I don’t think 180,000 plus apps is limiting. And the camera on the Adam…. looks really ugly and I agree with many…you wanna look up someone’s nose?
@Ian, Astroturfing much, or, are you a burned up Apple customer? Realizing this Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC has a hell lot better hardware for the money than the iPad, 180,000 apps means nothing when half of them are fartapps and “xrayscannerz”, with this I can port something from *Nix universe and get some work done anyway. Also, we all know that an “ugly” camera makes you look ugly in the photos it takes. Poor asteroturfers, they have nothing to criticize this or other tablets but childish rants. I’d be pissed off too, wasting money on a giant crippled ipod touch or iPad tablet PC.
@Ian, lol sounds like we have a fanboi here’s an idea crazy though it may be lets let the people decide if they want to install flash. Oh and iPhone OS 4 does not have multitasking it has “multitasking look” into it and you will know what I mean by that.
I think its funny that for an article that supposed to be a review for some unknown PC tablet, it mostly talks about the Apple iPad. The same goes for the comments. What a great ad for Apple I say! In my opinion this as an appalling review for a product. Does not tell me what I want to know about it and it just displays a personal attack on Apple. Sad very sad!
I didn’t read this article yet, but I have read many. I own an iPad Tablet PC, but frankly if I had known about this first I would have bought this Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC over the Ipad. Why don’t get me wrong the Ipad is a great product in its own right, however I believe that they imposed too many limitations on it from a functional obsolescence stand point. Frankly it is comparable to a third or fourth generation Palm with a lot of memory. Single thread stability is a predictable plus. But tiny apps on a Gigabyte system allows you to put a ton of useless junk on it. Then rant about how fantastic it is.
My personal beefs with the Ipad.
1. Non Functional proprietary restrictive bluetooth. Hmm I’ve got a bluetooth device, I’ve got a bluetooth phone I can sync them and dump or update my contacts Right? Wrong I could do this on palm without special apps but not the Ipad.
2. I have a network printer, but no apps come with a printer function I have to buy that separate.
3. No SD card input built in, Even your cheesiest palm, phone, eReader, MP3 player come with this, Really!
4. I have to give them props though as a native pirate I have actually bought more apps with this device than I have all of my computers put together. Seriously, I don’t know if that is a bad thing, but yes sucks for pirates.
5. This is a big one. The Calendar, Contacts, Tasks databases aren’t really optimized or formalized. If three different apps access whatever rudimentary database there is the outcomes are abysmal. With palm the databases were pretty standardized so whatever app was your comfort zone the end result would be the same AND IT WOULD SYNC!!!! Actually I do not believe that there is a native Tasks program at all and that SUCKS Donkey Balls!!!
6. Proprietary sync software Itunes I have hated ITunes since it came out, I still Hate ITunes and forcing me to use it pisses me off, but that comes with the territory.
7. No Access to file structure, understandable to ensure optimum equipment performance in the hands of dummies, but techies like to know what they are dealing with.
8. No Flash, which basically means that half the internet is off limits or one irritating thing you download an article with a flash slideshow and you get a piece of the article and are left with a big WTF is the rest of the article. It isn’t until you lug out your laptop or primary computer can you figure out what in the world is going on on the page.
9. No file structure means you can’t just download any old thing off the internet, because if the pad doesn’t like it You get DENIED. Which is a pain because that means you can’t download something store it for sync and deal with it later on your primary platform.
10. Not enough piratable apps out there yet.
Had to put that in there.
The basic jist of the IPad is a money funnel into Apple and that is fine and all. It just isn’t my cup of tea, because it means limitations. Limitations that I don’t necessarily like or want, but am enslaved to and as a black man enslavement isn’t something that I take kindly to.
I won’t say the negatives without the positives though.
1. Jailbreaking Rocks!! Always trying to buck the system I am.
2. Screen resolution is great. Sucks I can’t use my Wacom stylus though.
3. Has lots of OK apps. Nothing like good old DateBK 6, but plenty of apps to say the least.
There is more but that is all over the net and I have to go to bed now. I hope this helps. I think I will buy one of these Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC thing when it comes out, but I may wait a few weeks to hear all of the comments.
[...] is going to be on the 3rd quarter of this year. It is a Tablet PC that aims to compete with iPad, Notion Ink Adam, and WePad (German-made tablet PC now known as WeTab) Wall Street Journal had a one-on-one [...]
@Ian, You say that Apple hasn’t produced something half ass, what about the iPhone 4g. Not only has apple lied about how much single service you have but also screwed left handed people with the new phone. HAHA – Half ass my ass.
@Craig, NONE of my friends or others I’ve chatted to have an issue with the antenna on the new iPhone. Media bull crappie! And yet the iPhone is selling like crazy. Even today in the news… Australia is having problems keeping up with demand. And so also… Where is this iPad killer? Apple just ramped up production. I LOVE mine and use it for pretty much everything. Sorry… You can hate all you want. But Apple is doing amazinging well and innovating some very cool things.
If they can make a Notion Ink Adam Tablet PC 7″ version then it will definitely be cheaper and go up against the Kindle too. 7″ is the ideal size for an eReader.
So, is Notion Ink Adam tablet out yet? Was it worth canceling your pre-order and waiting for the Notion Ink Adam tablet PC release date?
Sorry, apple, but your hardware is a deal breaker. No SD card, no usb port, no camera, no dual core, no screen visible in direct sunlight, no user replaceable battery, no touchpad (on the back), and what you do have is over priced.
looked at the specs alone and it beats everything out there at present and into immediate future…Only downsides I can see are what is the warranty and if problems arise, will they stand by the early adopters who make it possible, to make this a success if problems occur….Personally they will get my money but I still have reservations on quality issues……
“”How the hell are you going to watch Youtube videos and movies on your iPad?”"
If you’ve never heard of HTML5 than you better stop reviewing things.
That sound amazing. Can anybody tell me where is the country of its origin???
@anton, yeah, HTML 5, because SOOO many companies are writing websites in HTML 5 right now… oh wait… they aren’t… EVERYONE uses Flash… 50% of the internet is flash, and Apple thinks they own a big enough market share that they can FORCE HTML 5 on the world?? haha.
