Intel CTL 2go Convertible Classmate NL2 Netbook Review

Date Published: August 16, 2010

The rugged material and construction of Intel CTL 2go Convertible Classmate NL2 Netbook can let it survive a fall from 1 meter high. It has water-resistant and anti-microbial keyboard and touchpad which are just perfect for children’s messy behavior. To make it more damage-proof, this netbook is configured by default to ship with a 32GB SSD hard drive. But if you want more disk storage, there is also a choice or a standard 160GB hard drive. Two very outstanding features of the NL2 is the built-in retractable handle and the dual audio jacks. The former lets a kid carry it around without the need for a separate bag and the two audio ports means two children can share and listen at the same time!

The convertible tag on its name is tacked on because this netbook can transform itself to a tablet computer courtesy of a 10.1-inch resistive touch screen. Intel has decided to forego a multi-touch capacitive approach because it took into consideration that kids will find it better to use a stylus rather than fingers to navigate.

Kids can still use their fingers should they choose to do so since the touch screen is sensitive enough. It has an accelerometer sensor so it can automatically orient the display depending on which way it is being held. Since this computer is meant for e-learning, the NL2 is Wi-Fi enabled but there is an option to upgrade it for 3G or WiMax connectivity should the need arises.

Lastly, the NL2 will run either on Linux or Windows. Either way, the price for the NL2 won’t come cheap. The Linux version will reportedly retail for $499 and the Windows-configured model to sell at $599.

This is a big letdown, whatever happened to the $100 One Laptop Per Child initiative which Intel championed 3 years ago. I guess the NL2 is simply targeted for First-World countries.
