Archos 9 PCTablet With Windows 7 Edition Review: Not A Good Combo

Date Published: February 17, 2010

The initial release of the Archos 9 PCTablet last year suffered poor reviews. CNET review gave it a 2.5 stars rating because of its sluggish performance. Even users showed their dismay for the Archos 9, most of them giving it a negative review. Buyers called it an overpriced touchscreen netbook that retails for $550 (basic price) but is not even as fast as the low-range netbooks in the market. CNET and other reviewers put the blame on the mediocre 1.6GHz Atom Z510 processor which is single-threaded. The Windows 7 Starter edition was also lacking the full tablet features of Windows 7 that is why the Archos 9 wasn’t maximizing its sensitive touch screen.

I wonder why Archos failed to address this sluggishness of Archos 9 PCTablet up to now. The Archos 9 is a sweet gadget that runs on a full OS. I have no other complaints about this 9-inch wonder gadget except for its obvious tardiness in executing simple Windows operations like opening Microsoft Office and browsing the internet. Archos should replace the processor on the Archos 9 with the latest Atom N450 Pine trail processors and add more memory. While the Archos 9 is beautifully packaged, the company should realize they are pushing it as the “future of netbook computing.” They are shooting themselves in the foot by claiming Archos 9 as the best form factor of netbooks when it performs so badly in carrying out simple Windows 7 tasks. Archos 9 is being marketed not only for its capability to play full 1080p HD movies but a mobile workstation so they should fix the speed performance issue first. This problem is not evident though in Archos 7 Internet Media Tablet and Archos 5 Internet Tablet. These two models have lots of good reviews, FYI.

It might be that Archos have stockpiled too many Archos 9 PCTablets with Atom Z510 processors and trying to sell them off first before they roll out an Intel Pine N450 version. What a foolish notion, sluggish Archos 9 haven’t been selling well and the company should just refurbish their existing inventory and replace the processors. They will lose some money replacing the packaging and processors but I bet they will lose more if these current Archos 9 units go on rotting on their warehouses.
